The president ot the republic of Peru, Gulllermo nilllnghurst, was taken prisoner Jo-day Jo-day by military revolutionists. Tho rebels attacked tho presidential presiden-tial palace this morning under tho leadership of Colonel Bonavldes.. General Enrique Varela, premier and minister of war. was killed In tho fight which ensued. Dr. Augusto Durand, a former revolutionary re-volutionary leader, took possession of the palace. The attack on the palace began nt half past four In tho morning. Inhabitants In-habitants of Lima ran Into tho streets alarmed by the firing. Soldiers Soldi-ers wero ordered to fire volleys into the air In order to prevent the formation for-mation of crowds and by this method they kept the panic stricken people moving from place to place. A civilian bystander was killed by a bullet. President Bllllnghurst was later taken by the rebels as a prisoner to Callao- from which port he will be sent into exile In a foreign country. Peru's sudden revolutionary trouble Is due principally to President Blll-lnghurst's Blll-lnghurst's earnest efforts to place the finances of his country on a sound basis. His scheme for doing this Involved the strictest economies throughout tho public service and naturally proved unpopular, particularly particu-larly among ofllco holders who saw their salaries and estimates pruned with a merciless hand. At the end of last year congress refused to vote the budget and President Presi-dent Bllllnghurst issued a decree declaring de-claring that tho old estimates would romaln In force till the end of 1914. Potltlons from many of the provinces prov-inces wero presented to tho president asking for the dissolution of tho congress but all tho political parties opposed this stop asVunconstltutlonal President Bllllnghurst Is the son of nn Englishman but was born In Peru. His mother .was a Peruvian. Ho Is about 05 years old. In 1868 his father was drowned In a tidal wave. Young Bllllnghurst, wa3 educated edu-cated In Peruvian schools and was a brilliant scholar. Ho wroto several books 'n his early manhood. He took an active pert In the wnr between Peru nnd Clillo and later became mayor of Lima, tho capital. Ho bo- enmo president In Septombor 1912. Dr. Augusto Durand who today seized tho government, has led soveral sov-eral revolutions In Peru. Ho fought ngalnst President Pardo in 190S and against President Legulin In 1909. After Af-ter 1i!b followers had been defeated and had surrendered to tho government govern-ment troops in the latter-jycar.
