Show M I No rich man has ever been president of Bl the United States, says the Youth's Com- B g panion. Washington remains to this dav H the wealthiest of all our presidents, and H Roosevelt, who left an estate of about B seven hundred thousand dollars, probably f stands second. Jefferson was almost banqrupt whence retired from the office and for many years lives in straitened circumstances; cir-cumstances; the two Adamses, Garfield. Hayes and the two HarrisoVis were poor ' men everfby the standards of their own times, and one of the pathetic episodes of our history is General Grant's struggle to provide an estate for his family by writing his memories. It is deplorable that men who have held the highest office in the nation should suffer sue anxieties m later life, but it certainly is a gratifying gratify-ing indication of the quality of our democracy demo-cracy that money has never been a qualification quali-fication for the Presidency.
