Show TRYING TO FOOL THE .PEOPLE If tho Journal t.Vh just keep up lis nervo It will provo to bo tho clinm- plon flgarcr ot tho ago, and will no doubt bo Instrumental In figuring Cucho County rich, providing sum- ( clont county ndvertlalng can bo thrown Us way. In a recent issue wo related how, I wo had beon Invited to bid for tho delinquent tax list, had ,beon told that the contract would bo awarded ( to the lowest bidder, that wo were tho lowest bidder, and tlesptto tho fact, tho contract was awarded to the Journal. Wo wcro not whlnnlng about It, from tho fact that when asked to bid wo replied that wo would not oven bo considered, and would not luxvo thought ot such a thing IkkI wo not been Informed that the lowest bidder would get the Job. Even after being thrown down un-dor un-dor tho circumstances wo woro not soro, as wo woro not disappointed, and figured as wo statod that "deserving "de-serving democrats" must bo cared tor. But now tho Journal in Its Thursday's Thurs-day's Issue come3 forward with tho chargo that our statement "1ms no foundation, In fact," In other words that wo were not tho lowest bidder, In other words that we simply lied. Well, of course tho Journal may be right, but still wo aro not convinced. ' The Journal bid 25 cents a descrip tion an I we bid 17 cents a description. descrip-tion. Now providing thero are 2,000 delinquent tax descriptions printed. The Journal will bill the county for $500 and will bo paid as that Is tho contract. Had our bid been accepted accept-ed for 2,000 descriptions we would have billed the county for 1340, or 160 less than tho Journal. Anybody,. Any-body,. save the Journal can see without with-out pencil and paper which la the loweat bid. As the Journal states it- Is necessary neces-sary for It to run the list three times while twice would have been sufficient suffi-cient for this paper. And It may bo true, aa it stales, that the Commissioners Commis-sioners woro anxious to have the names paraded before tho pnbllo as many times as possible. Somo com- y -inls8ion,?ra give weekly papers tho .preferenia pa the ground that it is .not tho most pleasing thing in tho .world to taxpayers to have tholr names paraded as delinquents from .tlmo to t'mo in the public prints. Ev-,ery Ev-,ery delinquent knows that ho is delinquent de-linquent without reading It In a pa-. pa-. per, anl If a delinquent wants to I read his name In tho delinquent list ho will seo to It that ho does so, whether It be printed In a dally or otherwise. Of courso if thoro is anything any-thing elevating, soul Inspiring, or of good report for pcoplo to read John Jonos' Ocllnquent taxes for thrco successive times, and bill tho pcoplo .for an extra $160, fojr so doing, tho pooplo will get this good thing. As a matter of fact tho law Is the thing to go by, somothlng tho Jour- I nal and tho .present comity administration admin-istration bavo sought, and apparcnt- I ly still seek to ovado. Tho list must bo publlslvcd according to law and paid' for. A weekly paper has It over all othors as to tho number of Imos ot publication, and a semi- or trl-wookly has it ovor a dally. Tnat lu not tho fault ot tho paper, it thero bo any fault It Is tho law. Dut a ,bld Is a bid that calls for conponsa- itlon, an! In this matter thero was Just 8 cents a Ascription dlffereaco In tho two bids, ours being 8 conts a deaeripMon In favor of the sounty.
