Show RESnNSON " 80818 flCffli Federal Food Administrator Issues JNolicc of. Diminution of Allotments. The Allotment Per Capita Per Month for Utahns Mas Deen Reduced for ' the Month of August to Two Pounds for Each Person. Tho federal food administrator liat pilt further restrictions on sugar allotments allot-ments for canning during the month of August. The stop tins only been taken after considerable eorrcpou-deuce eorrcpou-deuce with Washington, In which the lotfitl food administration ha protested up to tho last moment before giving In. The lust of n series of telegrams between be-tween Washington and Salt Lake put the entire matter concretely ns follows fol-lows : "We have nready allotted your, state more than any other on basis of population popu-lation and Industries and therefore can-" not see our way clear to Increase your allotment and ho fair to tho rest of the country." Further correspondence from the national na-tional capital nIo develops the fact that sugar Is .now n war commodity under tho direct Jurldlctlon of the government nnd of which, therefore, only the .smallest possible portion mut now bo used by the civilian population. The retailer has now become be-come merely the dispenser of that war commodity and must distribute It not as a profit-making article, but on the liot equitable and saving terms. The August allotment and distribution distribu-tion for Utah was delayed by reason of lio fact that the state food administrator administra-tor did not receive the announcement of tho allotment from Washington until July 'JO. The present allotment, based on two pounds per enpta, was then put Into effect In every unit, n unit used In this sense by the local food administration admin-istration to mean u city, town, hamlet of point of distribution. An arrangement arrange-ment was made ns during July for home ciiunhig to tako care of n given proportion of the heads of families In each. community. The sugar was then allotted to the Mailers on a basis of normal trade In each community communi-ty as disclosed by the retailer's statement state-ment filed with the food admlulstator. A statement was 'also linked of the mcrelmntsuis to the amount' of sugar on band on July i!0 or In transit, and this .amount was deducted from 'the August nllotlnent. ., The equitable distribution of the allotment al-lotment was and Is still In the bands of the retailers and In ense It Is not fairly doiu the federal administrator reserves the right to step In and redistribute re-distribute between the dealers. On top of this nrrangcinent came gram'1 lings from Washington that V.&', u were getting more than i.i .t f.i . share of sugar and, although tl.; natter has been thrnsicd out over and over again by the local nnd national nation-al food officials, the government remains re-mains firm In Its stand that Utahus must do with k'M of the precious foodstuff. food-stuff. Cut Not Really Serious. Vl:u proem cut In the canning ills- ' i ' .i la i. . i,i. Ideivd, however, i ! ;n f"'.r". ", It ml?ht have been in tho earlier munihs, fur In August but few fruits aro on the market for canning. Twenty-five pounds of sugar, It Is estimated, can easily take vn roof ro-of 100 quarts of pcnclic for Instance, an amount of one fruit which few housewives enro to conserve. Jellies calling for sugar on the fifty-fifty basis will simply have to be stricken from the August canning list. A spirit of neighborllncss nnd fair play will have to be developed among Utnhns In the matter. Families of two orthreetlonot need tho stino amount of sugar for canning as thoso of a larger size nnd perhaps with smaller pocketbooks. These smaller families are usked, therefore, to use only Just what they need, even if the amount far underreacbes that allowed by the food administration, and to leave their unneeded share to the larger group next door, Tho administrator also reminds re-minds guests that It may now not be out of place when dining nt the -home of friends to take their sugar with them, us has long beeit the custom in some of the nlllod natl&ns; since every spoonful served ut the table means so much lesfor the family sugar bowl. The new regulations will, of course, It is estimated, put a ban on many food luxuries", but such a consideration cannot, of course, even be counted when 'thousands in the allied nations are starving, for sugar. In English hotels for tho most part no desserts are served but fruits, no sugar can be used for manufacturing in England except ex-cept in the caso of Jams and condensed milks. No confectionery requiring sugar can be made in France or Italy, nor ice cream in France or England. Utnhns, according to the attitude taken by Wushlngton, hare no moral right to consider the sugar within the state ns ihelr own. It now'belongs In part to the hungry masses lu France, Eng-.hnid Eng-.hnid and Belgium. 1 The text of the new regulations sent 1 out to retailers Ik as follows: 8peclsl Instructions. Under the new rules and regulations governing sugar, the allotment per capita per month has been reduced for the mouth of August to two pounds as against three pounds during the month of July. Your attention Is called to this pertinent per-tinent fact, namely, you i lust consider, yourself part of the national scheme, of sugar distribution, nnd you are therefore virtually acting In tho capacity ca-pacity of n distributor or sugar for the United States government: In-other words, you must recognize that tho sugar belongs to the United Shite government and that you are allowed 1 cent per pound profit for'plstributlug this sugar to the ultimate consumer. You will, therefore, be very careful In accounting for every pound of sugar thut you receive for your August allot- jient, nnd you nro. ndvlsed that n very v urate check must bo kept by you, The food administrator Is endeavor-ng endeavor-ng to allot, the sugwr lit as equitable i manner ns posihlo In each community, com-munity, and It Is possible that crrorrf nay creep In nnd one merchant to-wive to-wive less sugar (h.ui he feels that he is entitled to, .but you must realise Hint this Is not Intentional, and you are urged, a- far as possible, to bury trntta.'jcalou'leti and to v.orl: together for the common cood.
