Show THE ABOLITION OF THE GARBAGE PAIL t Possibly the enormity of the, ordinary or-dinary waste of food in connection with table and kitchen scraps has never been more vividly illustrated than by the projects which are now underway in connection with the reclamation re-clamation and conservation work at our army training camps. In all ot these camps both here and abroad, much attention Is being given to this .Important matter but In some Instances In-stances special efforts are being made for thorough development along certain particular lines. In connection with many camps large vegetable gardens, cultivated by soldiers sol-diers have produced remarkable results re-sults this year, and it is proposed next 7r great! to extend tnls work. Large quantities ot waste bread aad bread crumbs instead ot being dumped into the garbage pall as was formerly the universal prac. tie, aad as Is still the custom, ia thousands s hornet, hotels, restaurants, restaur-ants, bakeries, ate., throughout tha country, ara dried la avaas, fo ra-vet ra-vet them from gettiaf atalay, aad sold for chicken feed. Cooked grease, rats aad meats uasuitahla as food ara also, saved from, tha gar bage pail for ase la tha production of glyeerine; but this is not all, for It has beea found that there is a large amount ot other kinds ot waste animal and vegetable matter which can be utilised to great advantage Ias pig feed and at least one army camp is undertaking to conserve such fotfd by feeding It to swine and (thus providing a supply ot ham, ba- 'con; scrapple and sausage tor this soldiers, I This may seem like carrying tho ( Idea of saving waste to the extreme .limit, but as a matter of fact it is nothing more than a reasonable and proper application of . conservation to .every day life. Every pound of food represents1 a certain definite .amount of human energy and life, and to save food is to save lite. Moreover; More-over; while this saving of human life in our army camps by these new conservation con-servation methods ljk great, the opportunity op-portunity for such life saving work is. not confined to such camps alone, but extends to every city, town, farm and home throughout the country. (Perhaps we need to add to our already al-ready long list of patriotic efforts Just one more a campaign for tho abolition of the garbage pall. |
