Show FROM THE EDITOR Wo are glad to noto tho ubovo retraction, and arc delighted to know hat tho P. and S. Club did not moan what It said, and nfter so much experience ex-perience If tho bcrlbo who handles tho mutter for publication for this club will be Just a little bit moro careful in tho use of the English language there will bo no occasion for such occurrences as tho above. Inasmuch as this club apparently does not yet undeistand our position innd asks us to statu It specifically, whllo wo feel that wo havo dono so In plain English so that "Ho who runs may read," wo aro willing to repeat In the hopes that we may be clearly understood. Tho Utah-Idaho hospital was built by local people after much preliminary prelim-inary work, and ns far as we aro nblo to know since It opened its doors, has been phonoinonly successful. success-ful. Its dlrcctorato Is made up of such men as Anthon Amlen-on, Lorenzo Hanson, Thomas Smart, M. S. Eccles, Georgo II. Champ, H, E. Hatch, II. E. Hancoy, J. W. Hen; d ricks, A. L. Hyer, S. C. Parkinson, John' C. Greaves, Alma L. Jenson, Josoph T. Pond, W, S. Hanson, and George V. Smith. In our humblo opinion it Ih n distinct compliment tn any mnn, or any set of men, or any Institution to assemble bucIi nn array ar-ray of good men and enlist them fn Its cause, men who, aro careful, con-scrvatlvo, con-scrvatlvo, leaders In nil of tho (Lilly .'avocations that go o mako a groat I county and commonwealth, and 'above all men who ore Just to their fellows and whom all could trust to seo that no Injustice is done. Aftor operating for a number of years under tho nbovo dlrcctorato tho P. and S. Cltib of Cacho County through tho press claims that these men aro perpetrating an lnjustlco on tho pcoplo and "really believe that when tho people nro appraised of the, facts In tho case that they will demand an accounting and possibly a conversion nnd reorganization to put In under tho control of a neutral board elected by tho pooplo and nn-swerablo nn-swerablo to tho people" It accused theso men of bolug partisan, that a "cleverly worded by-law'' which they, themselves, passed nnd adopted divested thorn of "nil power and direction" di-rection" and that thoy woro "directors "direc-tors who do not direct." It mado many direct Imputations and Insinu ations that In our humblu opinion were not In keeping with tho honorable honor-able and just methods of doing business busi-ness that havo characterised the acts and methods nf theso men during tho space of n lifetime. It Insinuated that the hospital was bolng run In an unethical way." that tho medical dliector "controlled tho trustees,' anil mado tho very grave charge that the hospital should bo "reorganized, ' "rededlcated" and "standardized according ac-cording to acceptable Ideals to public, pub-lic, piofesslon and trustees." Theso nro somo of the epithets, some of the Insinuations, some of tho charges Mint this club Imputed n this hospital, of which the above gentlemen form the directorate. There nro many othcis, but It Is un-l necessary to recite longor. Now then, wo did not rush to the defense of "some defenseless Infant Industry." wo did not net as spokesman spokes-man nnd sponsor'' for tho hospital in any senso of the word. Indeed wo were mindful of tho fact that It was not n sickly weakling, but wns a strong, vigorous, successful Institution Institu-tion that was dally speaking for it-seir. it-seir. Wo simply refused to publish criticisms of this Institution, upon tho grounds that such were an attack at-tack on n worthy Institution, nnd would not do any good. Criticisms that reflected on tho honor and Integrity In-tegrity of tho directors of tho hospital, hos-pital, and that wero belittling to tho perpetrators thorcof. Wo simply de- jtllnnfl In nan mil .nltifiitla In nilf Ipluni of this institution and in belittling theso men. Tho P. nnd S. Club does us honor In assuming that wo are capable of defending an Institution of this kind. Unfortunately, however, wo nro not posted in the ethics of hospital organization or-ganization and management, and therefore have nothing to say as to tho policy pursued, othor than to express ex-press confidence and satisfaction In tho personnel of directors nnd staff, surely such men ought to furnish a sufficient guarantee that nothing but n good, wholesomo policy will be pursued. And If the opposite) should at any tlmo prevail, surely tho personnel per-sonnel of tho directorate Is sufficient guarantee Miat the propor remedy will ho applied. If such Is not tin case wherein is thero any safety for poor mortals, for indeed the above dlrcctorato aro of "tho salt of tho eaith." No dear friends of tho P. and 3. Club we did not "Just lovo a scrap," but on tho other hand, wo havo done all wo could to avoid a "scrap," and In fact a uvmber of friends havo asked ask-ed us If wo havo lost tho deslro for somo of our old tlmo indulgonclcs In word battles. Your assumption that wo might possibly be a. "buttinski" makes us smile. Just an indication of jour cleverness In Imputing to us tho role In which you find yourselves. In your last artlclo you attacked tho hospital report. It did not suit you from a gieat nmny angles, nnd none or you mo stockholders. Tho report wns satisfactory to tho stockholders, as Is evidenced by tho records. Who Is tho "buttinski?" Further, wo do not find a single word wherein wo havo attacked the P. and S. Club for "nsklng before tho public why It Is denied tho privilege priv-ilege of Joining and helping to mako it moro generally useful." Wo have simply rofused to handle- Us criticisms crit-icisms of a woithy Institution, nnd Its what appears to us unwarranted attacks on tho men running tho hospital. hos-pital. If tho. P. and S. Club believes all that it charges this Institution, and tho men running if and operating it nro guilty of, thero Is a right tin 1 a wrong wny to handlo tho mn'tlor, Tho hospltnl Is hero, tho men ure horc, they aro visible, thoy are business busi-ness men, easy to approach, and roady nnd willing at nil times to listen to tho appeals of their fellow I men. They are not Infallible, and Ilka all mortals, aro subject to error. The right way is to tako It up with tho directors nnd correct anything-that anything-that needs correction from within. Tho wrong way Is to attack It, and them, nnd attempt to apply remedies reme-dies from without. We trust wo havo mado our position posi-tion plain, and that U tho P. and S. Club does not ngreo with tho policy pursued nt tho hospital, and has a better policy, it will present its case to tho directors, and IT Its policy 's hotter and moro conduelvo to the ends Tor which tho hospital was built wo aro suro tho directors will adopt its policy. Otherwlso wo uro frank to say that tho directors will Just as rrankly say that tho stockholders aro satisfied and that thero will bo no change, and tho hospital will pursuo tho "even tenor of Its way." Abov nil, don't knock nn Institution that Is a credit to tho community, ami that Is doing a world of good, and don't unjustly crltlclso mon who nr entitled to tho most wholesome words of commendation. Tho nbovo retraction Is accepted In good faith, and wo wish tho P. and S. Club overy posslblo success In J'n woithy endeavors. |
