Show Family Reunion Held At Lewiston On February 29, being tlio 76th birthday of Mr. Ncls Bergcson of this city, a very enjoyable family reunion re-union was held nt his old home In Lewiston. There were forty-two mem. hers present, Including children, grandchildren, nnd great grandchildren grandchil-dren who camo from far n"d near. A great mnny members of tho family fam-ily found It Impossible to be present on account of bolrv; so far away, or there should have been many moro present. At 2 o'clock a very delicious dinner din-ner was served, after which Mr. Bcr-geson Bcr-geson was presented with a very nice rocking chair by members of tho family. A talk was then given by Mr. Hcrgeson after which n genealogical geneal-ogical organization was effected for tho purpose of tracing the family tree back to the Fatherland nnd securing se-curing as many names as possible for temple work. A very enjoyable program was then rendered, after which a light luncheon of sandwiches, sandwich-es, ico cream and cake was served. A Life Sketch Mr. Niels Bergcson was born In Olumslov, Sweden, In 1810. At tho ago of six years bo was left an orphan or-phan without a homo or anyone who cared to look after blm. Ho got very little schooling and was compelled to work very hard. At tho age" of fifteen fif-teen ho left his native country nnd crossed over to Denmark where ho secured work In tho city of Copenhagen Copen-hagen until bo was twenty-throe years of age, whv ho was marrl-Jd to Olivia M. Jensen, and sottle'd down In a small town near Copenhagen. Copenhag-en. Ho got work a short time after this in tho royal park of Bern Stcrff, where ho worked for a number of years as a gardener. It wns hero that ho first heard tho. gospel "and then after some Investigation was baptized baptiz-ed into the Church of Jesus Christ of Lattorday Saints. Three years later, la-ter, ho, with his family Immigrated to America. They arrived In Logan In August 1870, being among the early settlers of Logan. Hero he worked at chopping timber In tlio mountains as a means of gaining a livelihood for blm nnd his family. In 1892 ho and his family moved to Lewiston, whero they took up a farm. Thcv made their homo on the bank of Cub river in a dug out for two yearsa before helng ablo to build a house. Mr. Bergcson did much pioneering pio-neering of this country: clearing brush, fighting grasshoppers, crickets, crick-ets, nnd frost, and building canals, meeting houser, nnd roads. But at last tho sturdy pioneers of that section sec-tion were successful nnd wore soon comfortably situated, Mr. Bergcson being among tho first to move Into a houso. After returning home from a mission mis-sion to Denmark nnd dividing hh property with his family nt Lewis-ton. Lewis-ton. Mr. Bcrgeson went down Into Millard countyJnd took up another form. At thUpfiUco ho met and mar-rlcd mar-rlcd his scwond wlfo, Anna Maria Teterson and settled down and helped help-ed to pioneer this wild and unsettled country, driving tho first successful nrtlslan well in tho vicinity, and as a school trusteo, ho helped to build tho first school houso in that section. On account of tho poor soil and unfavorable climate, tho settlers of thnt section were compelled to abandon aban-don their (arras, Mr. Bcrgeson being among those who had to leave all they had and start empty handed again. Ho accordingly moved to Logan Lo-gan In tho year 1S99 with his wlfo nnd family, whero ho bought a small farm and resides at tho prosent ttmn. Mr. Bergeson is tho father of sixteen six-teen sons and three daughters, all of whom aro living, except two boys and ono Btrl. Ho Is still In good health nnd vigor, and expects to live many years yet. |
