Show stefanssqn's new land one hundred miles North of prince Patrick island. STEFflfiS5QN fJND-riEW LAND Tho new land that StcfanMibn hn discovered In about n hundred miles to the north of I'rlnco Tntrlck Island. The most Routhorty part of tho land which ho visited Is considerably to the east of the most eastward extension of I'rlnce Patrick Island. The Island, as far as ho saw It, deems to be nearly bisected by tho ono hundred and fifteenth meridian west of OrocnVlch. The lands nearest to It, as far as we know, arc tho Polynia Islands, a llttlo group to the north ot Prlnco I'ntrlclt Island, discovered by SlcCItntock In 1SG3. They appear to bo about Boventy-flve or elshty miles from tho new land. The Island Is over 1W miles due west of tho northern part ot Hllcf IUngncs Island, discovered by Sverdrup, but Its most northern part, as.far as Stcfansson saw It, appears toJie further north than any other laud In tho great Parry archipelago to tho north of our continent. It probahly marks tho extension thus far to tli north of tho comparatively nhnllow waters thnt surround the Islands of tho Parry archipelago In other words, rises from the continental shelf In shallow water. Tho vl.wv ls.now generally held that nil tho lands ot the arctic rise from shallow water excepting a few Vulcanic Islands. Stefansson's discovery, therefore, scms to show that In this part of the Arctic ocean the sea Is com p-irntlvcly shallow, though Nanscn Ioun4 abyssm.il depths In about the same latitude to the north ot tho New Siberian . ifstands.
