A preliminary pre-liminary statement of tho general results re-sults of tho census of manufactures for tho city of Provo, was Issued by Director Sam L, Kogcrs of tho Bureau Bu-reau of the Census Department of Commerce. It was prepared under the direction of Mr. William M. Stuart, chief statistician for manufactures. manu-factures. Tho llgurcs nro preliminary and subject to such change nnd correction as may bo found necessary from n further examination of tho original reports. Tho census excluded tho hand trades, tbo building trades, and tho neighborhood Industries, nnd took account only of establishments conducted con-ducted under tho factory system. Statistics wero not Included for establishments es-tablishments having products for tho census year valued at less than $500 excopt that reports wero taken for establishments Idlo during a portion of tho census year of which began operation during that year, nnd whoso products for such reason wero vnlucd at less than $500. Tho word establishment as used In tho census reports mny moan more than ono mill or plant, provided thoy nro owned or controlled nnd operated oper-ated by a slnglo Individual, partnership, partner-ship, corporation, or other owner or operator, and aro located In tho same town or city. Tho reports wero taken for the calendar year onding December 31, '914, wherovor tho system of book-keoplng book-keoplng permitted figures for that period to bo secured, but when tho fiscal year of an establishment differed dif-fered from tho calendar year a report re-port was obtained for tho operations of that establishment for Us fiscal year falling most largely within the calendar year 1914. Tho cost of materials used In addition ad-dition to tho component materials which enter Into tho products of tho establishment for tho census year includes in-cludes tho cost of fuel, mill suppllos, nnd rent of powor nnd heat. Tho cost of materials, howovor, does not Include unused mntorlals nnd supplies sup-plies bought either for speculation or for uso during n subsequent period. Tho total cost of materials used during dur-ing tho yenr amounted to $511,000. Tho census Inquiry does not Include amounts paid for miscellaneous expenses, ex-penses, such as ront of offices, royalties, roy-alties, Insurance .ordinary ropalrs, advertising, traveling expenses, or allowanco for depreciation.
