Show j Growing Young This Winter j If wo could reverse tho wheel of time and set It to spinning In the opposite op-posite direction, thoro nro not many of us who would not do it, aro there? Few of us liko tho idea ot growing old, no matter how wo may try to put a brave face upon It. Hut perhaps If we would sit down and look Into tills mattor of growing old very critically nnd thoroughly, wo might not find It such an irrevocable irrevoc-able thing as It seems. Indeed we might find that during this very win-tor, win-tor, no matter what tho turning leaves of tho calendar may say, wo can grow young, and the next spring wo can bo considerably younger than wo aro nt present. For after all, what Is youth but alertness, Interest In things, zest in life? And because tho mind Is active and runs hither and you on quests of Inquiry and enjoyment, the body keeps active, the blood flows vicor ously. It Is only when the mind becomes be-comes dull, sluggish, when It Is not oceptive to now thoueht, .when It gets Into ruts of thinking, when it bocomes "cot," so to speak that the body begins to take on what wc call ige, that It shows forth In its way tho effect upon It of this kind of thinking, and becomes stiff, Inelastic, unresponsive Tho circulation slows down. Wo become sluggish, slow-moving, slow-moving, aged. Wouldn't it soem then that tho way to grow young this winter, or to keop tho mind Interested and alert, to glvo It thoso things which will nourish nour-ish It and mako it blossom out In many Interesting and beautiful ways. And this Is not difficult. Tho chief difficulty, especially It wo aro grow-'ng grow-'ng old fnst, Is to mako tho Initial effort. It is easier to renialu as we iro, oven though wo may not bo sat Islleil, than it Is to Inaugurate a change, and this Is where wo need to exert ourselves. But this onco dono, tho very chnnge will have in It enough of novelty nnd enjoyment to 'seep tho good work going. So if Wo want to grow young this winter, let ub Join somo club or so-Jioty so-Jioty whero we will bo brought Into touch with somo of tho big vital things of tho day; and let us Join In tho actual worlc ot tho club so that wo will get right into tho current ind bo revitalized by Its activity nnd movement. If wo do not liko club work, let us 'nko up some study thnt will bring us into contact with now Interests nnd now people, and progress In itch will glvo us satisfaction. It must be something for which wo havo a real liking, for if wo go to it as to a task it will not havo the effect we dcslro. Then in addition, we need to tako In good plays, good music, good lectures. lec-tures. Somotlmes It requires an effort ef-fort to do this. Often it Is much easier to sit comfortably at home in an easy chair by the flresldo, than It Is to dress and go out In tho dark and cold. Especially Is this truo It ono lives in tho suburbs. Tho thought of tho hurry nnd scurry to catch tho train to town, of tho long) wait for tho train homo, of the tiro-somo tiro-somo ride, nil mako tho prospect of a trip to town nnythlng but Inviting. But ull this 13 ngo talking. And If wo want to go on growing o'd, wo will listen nnd net upon such suggco tlon. But If wo want to grow young wo will not heed thorn. Wo will think of tho ploasuro nhead of us and wo will dress with keen interest. We will enjoy the rldo Into town. We will come home with new tilings to think and talk about. The result ot our little pleasure excursion will bo felt for several days In our freshened fresh-ened zest in lite. Most of us have passed through such an experience. Wo have gone unwillingly to somo affair, becauso of tho effort required to go, but wo have como homo brightened, Interested nnd with food for pleasant thoughts for many days. Just put this Into practice all ihe tlmo and in big ways and It certainly will help you to turn back tho wheel of tlmo. Barbara Boyd. |
