Show No Money lor Government Employees Washington, May 22. (Special Correspondence) . This week Wash-1 Ington and tho country havo been treated to another' demonstration of Democratic methods In running tho ' business of tho government. I An order of tho treasury depart-ment, depart-ment, Just Issued, compels moro ' , than 4,000 employes, custodians' corps to tako an enforced furlough of eight days without pay, between now and j tho first of July because thoro is no money to pay them. I This order will affect 4,575 persons; per-sons; and by far tho larger part of them aro women, who earn their llv-' ins by mopping floors and cleaning rooms in tho Federal buildings in 890 I cities scattered all over tho country. Theso women earn about $30 per month, and the loss of eight days pay will bo n grlovious hardship to them. Somo men also aro affected by tills involuntary vacation, tho highest paid of them being the Chlof of tho Custodian Cus-todian Department at Now York, who receives a salary of $2,800 n year. Tho order bears tho slguaturo or Assistant Secretary Byron Newton, who says, by way of explanation, that Congress Is to blamo. Ho asked thn Democrats at tho capltol to glvo him $2,800,000 for this work and thoy gave him only $2,050,000. It Is suggested here that tho Democrats Demo-crats havo never regarded cleanliness cleanli-ness as next to godliness and that their falluro to appropriate money for scrubbing floors is in lino with ancient an-cient party tradition. But it is equally equal-ly significant that the treasury department, de-partment, regardless of Congressional Congression-al action, seems to havo plenty of money to hlro exponslve lawyers' to defend John Skolton Williams against tho lawsuit Instituted by tho HIggs bank. Messrs Brandies and Uuter-moyer Uuter-moyer aro reported to be getting $10,000 fees for their services In this case, Tho motto of tho treasury department de-partment evidently Is: Thousands fcr defenso but not a cent for decency. |
