Show PROFS AND PROFS There are numerous factors which help determine the value of a mans man's college education but perhaps none is quite so important as the influence of the professors under whom he studies The nature of the influence exercised by different professors varies widely and the value of certain courses is almost entirely by the ability and personality of the professor teaching it Some courses which appear in the catalog to be more or less useless can be bew w worked into something very much worth while when taught by the right kind of a n teacher And on the theother theother theother other hand time spent studying apparently useful subjects subjects subjects sub sub- subI I is absolutely wasted because of oC the lack of tact and ability on the part of the instructor handling the class It is our opinion that there are too many instructors instructors instructors in in- in the school whose courses arc a waste of time simply because thc they do not possess the abIlity ability ability abil abIl- ity to put over useful subject matter Perhaps the most prevalent class of undesirable professors are those who to smother their own personalities and at the same time refuse to regard their students as having separate individual personalities They stand before beCore their classes each day reciting from notes or a more more or less memorized outline to students students students stu stu- dents who goon soon tire of their methods They soon place each student in a class either excellent good fair or bad and keep them in the class without al alteration alteration al- al throughout the term Their lectures differ little if any through each succeeding term They fail to adapt themselves to circumstances They fail to meet the individual requirements of their A phonograph could perform their duties just as well Then there are professors so absorbingly engaged in advance study of their own that they fail to grasp the students point of view They do not understand they cannot sympathize with their students And an instructor who cannot sympathize with his class is only wasting his time when he tries to teach them anything ing The type of oC instructor tor who perhaps arouses the wrath of student students more ore than any other kind is the theone theone theone one persists in giving hopelessly long assignments on useless subject matter There are too many in instructors instructors instructors in- in of this type who seem to take great delight in compelling their class to do great amounts of tireless routine work on subjects which bring about no development at all and are quite obsolete and arc immediately forgotten by the student when the course is completed There are other types of hopeless instructors with whom most of or us are arc well acquainted and whom we meet in our college study only too fre fre- It is quite at this time however to state that by no means all of the professors are of the undesirable type There are few whom we greatly appreciate under whom studying becomes not only an intellectual treat but a real inspiration They have their subject matter well vell in hand and change it frequently to meet new conditions They have agreeable personalities and make no attempt to hide the fact from the class that they like the rest of us are arc human beings They realize that no tWo students are alike and do not attempt to consider them as such They arc are well aware of the fact that no student will be prepared every day and make just allowances for it They know that a student has other interests than in their own particular classes and hold no grudge against him for having them They appreciate the fact that there other subjects being taught besides their own and that theirs is not the only subject of importance And above all they have are human and have sympathy 10 and 1 understanding understanding under under- standing which makes it possible for Cor them to obtain the confidence and respect of their students It is such instructors as these that make a college education a really desirable and useful experience |
