Show I i THE TilE PASSING OF THE BUG KUG W r If the Board of Regents has its usually undisputed undisputed 1 way the Utah Humbug will pass ss out of existence f 4 at t the close of ot the present school year Just what th their ir objections to the humor magazine are we have no not yet been able able- to definitely ascertain but it seems quite evident that the humor of the college student fails to tickle their funny bones if they have ve any 1 The action of the Regents is decided decidedly a backward c move Humor and humorous publications fill an indispensable function in our every day life It is 4 our sense of humor that helps us to pull through the hard places of life that make it possible for us to keep smiling in the face of adverse circumstances ci Humor provides perhaps our best and most delightful source of entertainment Humo r and wit keep the world happy and anU probably do A. A dp more than any other one thing to to make the world a pleasant sant place in wh which h to to live And the presence of humor magazines and in recent years of college humor magazines especially has done much not only in the provid providing ng of wholesome and cheerful entertainment but in developing developing de developing de- de the the sense sense of humor of the public at large The wit of American college humorists has at attracted attracted at- at wide nation attention and today the products of these young ri writers ers are almost without exception the most popular In the field of or humor There is something so fresh so so real eal so filled with youth and vigor in the humor of or college students stude that one cannot cannot cannot can can- not help but enjoy it Perhaps in our own case the Humbug has not been all that it could be But there are so many good things about it and so many ready opportunities to increase its v value lue and usefulness that its abolition is entirely unwarranted In most colleges where humor magazines are located especially in ih those institutions where they are arc most successful the publications exist as private enterprises That is some journalistic fraternity or club in the school assumes the responsibility of publishing publishing publishing pub pub- lishing the magazine and the the- enterprise is a success successor or failure depending on the merits of the paper This plan was followed here in the early days of the Humbug but the faculty of or the university desiring to exercise more over the Bug brought it under the direct control of or the university and issued it free to students Since that time the merits and influence of the Humbug have alike been steadily on the downward path The Bug should be saved Its position in student student student stud stud- ent activities and its remarkable potential possibilities make it extremely advisable to keep it on the campus There are arc two journalistic fraternities located here either one or both being well able to issue a magazine magazine magazine maga maga- zine which would reflect credit upon the university One of these has already applied for the permission to edit the Humbug We sincerely hope that the Regents will be broad enough to see the value of the Humbug and allow it to continue on the University campus preferably as as a private enterprise which will succeed or fail according to the merits of its contents |
