Show i t Cynical Notes I Iks I ATS Ars s k-s longus est estA estA I i I A CHALLENGE J ANSWERED The communication To the Campus Cynic or Cynics Dear Sir I 1 have been following with amusement amusement amusement amuse amuse- ment your column in the Utah Chronicle Chronicle Chronicle Chron Chron- icle in which you air your personal grudges against the fraternity and expand your boundless ignorance I am a fraternity man and d d- d proud of it You men who are re responsible responsible responsible re- re for humor column call so ed certainly seem not to be at least not members of an organization of any standing or decency or else you would never ne indulge in such ribald wit And the point I cannot see see is how you fellows on the outside looking in in can sit in judgment on something you know nothing of It seems to me that you fellows have a rotten case of inferiority complex and with the characteristic ignorance ignorance ignorance ance and of the vassel look to those who hold a position which you do to not with th ill-concealed ill envy You accuse the fraternity man manof manof manof of flaunting his pin before the school schoot and acclaiming himself a brother of God Yet you never saw a worthwhile worthwhile worthwhile worth worth- while fraternity man do that the school as a whole knows he does not and the fraternity man himself takes his position with pride of course but at the same time as a position in which modesty is a practicable virtue I You men put on your colored glasses sally forth into the world and look lookaround lookaround lookaround around for something to knock You look and before long the world looks like a cubists cubist's dream with you youat youat youat at the bottom and the fraternity man manat manat manat at the top Then you rave and call it humor H HYou HYou HYou H- H You also intimate that the fraternity fraternity fraternity frater frater- is detrimental to the school Let me refresh your memory with some facts At present there is only one activity the Chronicle in which fraternity fraternity fraternity fra fra- fra- fra men are arc not the leaders and not only the thc leaders but d d- d near the whole show The recent and Union building drives were total failures until the fraternities fraternities fraternities ties and sororities came to the rescue and saved em There has not been beena a student body president for the past five years who was not a fraternity man And all other worthy activities activities activities ties are the same Why dont don't you brilliant free thinkers get out and do something like this Organize the non-fraternity non mob into a compact unit capable of doing anything for forthe forthe forthe the university and then tell the fraternities fraternities fraternities fra fra- fra- fra tile they are a detriment to the school However I 1 laugh at your verbal antics and congratulate you on your remarkable command of English A A fraternity man who is also a abit abit abit bit of a thinker S The answer Dear Thinker Think r I am glad to hear that you are amused by the column which I help to conduct To amuse is one of my aims And I am also glad that this column has made you think to write a letter But ut I am afraid that you have not thought quite clearly and consecutively consecutive consecutive- ly Iy enough and that you consecutive I have misread misread misread mis mis- read the column I II I 1 myself am a fraternity man and like you I am proud of it My associate associate associate as as- in this undertaking is not a fraternity man but he has been a pledge to one of the most august fra fraternities fraternities fraternities fra- fra on the campus and he was not kicked out either cither He lIe perhaps is not nearly as fond of fraternities as I am but he is not so 50 rash as to say that they are not good for those that like them The Cynics CAN and DO sit in judgment on that which they DO UNDERSTAND for they are not on the outside looking in If you will read the a little little little lit lit- tle more carefully you will find that The Cynics have never accused the WORTHWHILE fraternity man of flaunting his pin or of claiming di divine divine divine di- di vine kinship The type they have accused of performing performing performing per per- forming such acts has always been the not worthwhile type The Cynics have Bever inferred that the fraternity was detrimental to the school It has always their contention that the fraternity man who was not worthwhile was Vas detrimental detrimental detrimental detri detri- mental not only to the school but butto butto butto to the fraternity And I beg leave to contradict you once again You state that fraternity men were leaders leaders leaders lead lead- ers in every activity with the exception exception exception tion of the Chronicle This is NOT TRUE The editor of the Chronicle and most of the male members his staff are fraternity men In fact he heis heis is a member of a fraternity which took second place in the Union building building building build build- ing drive and md first place in the Uton Uton- ian drive both examples given by y you u of the good work done by fra fra- fra- fra You also mention the fact that fraternity men are leaders in in all activities and that there has not been an A. A S. S U. U U. U president for five years who was not a fraternity man You might also say that there has not been an athlete for twenty-five twenty years who was not a fraternity manThe man The fraternities desire men of prominence prominence prominence prom prom- in student affairs and they get them I It t is for this reason that your suggestion that the non fraternity mob be organized is impractical Any man of sufficient genius to organize organize organize or or- the mob would be snapped up by a fraternity b before fore he got a chance to act he would be more valuable to any fraternity as a brother broth broth- er than as an opponent Now by dear thinker I have treated treated treat treat- ed you very justly I have answered your argument in a straightforward manner and I have not accused you of using ribald wit when you didn't nor of possessing an inferiority complex complex complex com com- plex when I didn't know what it il vassel whatever that may be anI anc an ancI and andI I most certainly have not accused you of raving although your ideas have not been exceedingly coherent in my opinion I have also consulted the dictionary frequently to assure the correct spelling of any words 1 I used and I have refrained from ador- ador ring my letter with needless profanity I enjoyed your communication very much and I repeat my invitation to you or others of similar mind to refute any of my arguments if you youcan can TilE THE NEW CYNIC |
