APPENDICITIS FAD - GETS A KNOCKOUT Just w hen the notion of getting on an opcrat- ' Ing table and having that part of the human anatomy, commonly called the appendix, cut out, has become quite popular, In fact so much of a fad that there arc those who claim to have had theirs removed three or four times, a Denver chemist springs himself on the public by proclaiming some very Important facts concerning con-cerning the little member. Just how much of reason there Is in his assertions we leave for some one else to saj, but ho is at least Interesting. Interest-ing. The chemist claims that tho appendix is tilled with air and acts very much tho same as a bulb of a syringe In foiclng matter from the Intestines. The cause of appendicitis he says, seems to bo duo in a great measure to eating foods too dllllcult of digestion which necessitates neces-sitates a strong phj sic, and then the tioublo begins. He says: "Appendicitis occuis much more frequently' among those who llc expensively and partake of many luxuries. All this food is easily and quickly converted Into glucose, or a gummy substance that lines the Inteiior of the Intestine In-testine with a thin but lmpcnetiable coating This closes the opening to the appendix. "Now, in the event that a stiong dose or phi sic Is taken and this lining Is quickly, dls- solvpd, the aperture of the appendix is opened. Tho air in the intestine, carrying with It a cei tain quantity of ellctc matter, will enter tho prolapsc'd Intestine, suddenly distending it and subjecting Its walls to considerable strain. The matter from the Intestines will thus remain re-main In the appendix. The particles contain-Ing contain-Ing a largo number of Injuilous germs will cling to the sides and Irritation will eventually begin. This will develop inflammation and finally tilceiatlon. A ooison will then have trouble with his appendix, and an opera Hon will sooner or latter have to bo performed to remove tho ulcerate! organs." This so far Is all well and good. One who likes to be fashlonablo will not pay much attention at-tention to that. In fact, some people might oven hae their appendix removed Just to show they aro high livers. Thoro aro many Instances where vanity lias got tho best of reason to such an oxtcnt as to carry tho thing that far. Hut, his next assertion Is the ono that Is apt to stir up such vain mudhcadstoa point that will bo painful. The Doior chemist claims to I have watched tho statistics for years and he notes that 8.1 per cent of those who aro thus operated upon go insane. That to him Is proof that the little syringe is Just as necessary as any other organ and to have It removed is almost al-most a sure thing to go to the "bug house." The question is passed up to the medcal pio-fession, pio-fession, and opinion of some of the leaders as to whether it Is advisable to take a physic, thereby placing tho appendix in danger of In-Damnation In-Damnation and an ultimate operation which would result in Insanity, or die a natural death, will be leeched with satisfaction. It is a pity that the present agitation has resulted re-sulted In preventing many people from taking out insurance policies. Not because of the loss to the Insurance companies but because of the loss to people at large, says the Ouray Herald. Tho principle upon which insurance is based Is sound. It provides for the helpless and kecus want, tnlsory and pauperism within bounds. While recent discoveries show that In some companies Insurance funds have been misused, in no company has the funds been dissipated to the point where the payment of losses Is endangcicd. All companies aro suffering suffer-ing loss of business, which will In the end fall upon the public in the form of families left penniless because of people being frightened away from Insuiance benefits The sooner the exposures are fully made and tho offenders punished the better It will bo for all. Many a man who would not take a dollar from the public till under any chcu instances, would not hesitate to use his oillcc as a means of private gain, by manipulating public funds or misusing his poweras a publloolllclal. This Is not theft In tho legal sense It Is grafting but the result to the public Is often tho same as downright theft. Huron Koinura praises lloosovclt with his last breath of American air. So did Wltte. Tho Russian soldiers cheered Hoosovclt's namo all along the long grey Unas in far-off Manchuria Man-churia when tho word "peace" was received. Isn't it strange with tho entlro world endorsing Uooscvolt that the Democratic party should still hestltato? "As mean as a life Insurance president" Is about tho severest comparison possible now-a days.
