Show Tor All Time (From tho speech of W. J. liallard at Schenectady, '.Y. .September 21, 1WM.) When the Hist Republican President, Presi-dent, Abraham Lincoln, was elected In 1m;o, we had 12.1,000 factories, with 1,000,000 workers. Now, under the protective tariff, we have u00,000 factories, fact-ories, with 7,000,000. For all time 477,000 faetoilcsaud d.iioo.ooo workois stand as a victory to theciedit of the protective tariff and the Republican party. Since tho hiitli of lepubllcan ad-I ad-I mlnistiation in lMiO, savings bank deposits hae increased by nearly $.1,000,000,0001 annual expoits by over Sl,:iO0,nth),0OO: bank clearings by SHU,-000,000,000, SHU,-000,000,000, ycail: money chculatloii by W, I22,ooo,ooo: values of larm piop-crty piop-crty by ll,ooo, ooo, ooo: factory capital by lt,:iot),000,0tX): steam railroads by 1H.000 miles: telegiaph lines by !K,-000 !K,-000 miles, telephone linos, an entire Incieaseof oer 1.000,000 miles; States of the t'nlon fiom ;il to 15, and soon, through the long, long list of material advantages. For all time the credit of the ictoiy in achieving these mighty losiilts stands witli the iiscal policies of the republican paity. The end of the last four yeais' democratic dem-ocratic rule found us with factories closed or half closed, with moie than, two million of willing workers out ot! woik: with empty cupboards and I families stilfeiing; with overstocked shelves and falling meichants: with failed and failing savings banks; with empty houses, unpaid rents, and unproductive un-productive real estate; with business shattered and public credit threatened; threaten-ed; with 2il2,000,000 added to our public pub-lic debt and no new assets to show for It; with capital afiaid and labor in want; with every one asking "What further calamity will happen nextV" This was defeat, bitter, dire defeat, after a four years' battle under democratic demo-cratic geneialship. Then William McKinley was elected commander-in-chief of the aimy of Industilal America. Ameri-ca. Ills Hist order of tho day was, "Protection to A met lean industries and A moi lean labor." Instantly, as If by the magic wand of an enchanter, factories opened up; idle workers got to woik; cupboard tilled, and families fami-lies lejoiced; merchants began to sell their goods and pay their bills; bav-lugs bav-lugs hanks piospered and multiplied; housis -old and tented, back rents were paid, and real estate was once more a productive asset; business confidence con-fidence was re-born, and tho public credit was strengthened; government bonds were paid off Instead of addl- tlonal ones being issued; capital lost its fear, and labor was no longer hungry; and every one was saying, "God bless William McKinley." For all time the credit for this great victory vic-tory on behalf of industrial Amcilca stands with the piotcctlvc tariff of the republican party. Sow the battle for the protection of that protective tariff Is again on. The attack must be again repulsed. Not a breach must be permitted In the walls of labor's cltldel of protection. protec-tion. The ramparts must be manned by able marksmen, who shall shoot to kill. Our men are ready, our guns arc ready, ammunition is plenty, and victory, vic-tory, republican victory, will again be ours when the sun goes down on November 8. |
