Show COLORS OF THE SKY. Scientist Explains How Glorlour Sunsets Sun-sets Are Formed. Prof. T. J. J. See of the United States navy 1ms observe the coior of t ho sky In vnrlouu altitudes hi high mountains, anil In dry mid moist countries, coun-tries, such ns Pgypt and Greece, unil Arizona anil the Mississippi valley. Ills conclusion Is that the beautiful red colors of sunsets nnd sunrises so much spoken of by Greek anil Roman writers, and so often Illustrated In landscapo painting, arise from water vapor in the lower layers of our at-mosphero, at-mosphero, absorbing tho blue and transmitting tho red light. According to Dr. Sec, tho reddish colors coma from that part of our air within five miles of the earth's Mirfnco, whllo tho deep blue of the sky arises from reflections re-flections of minute particles In tho higher parts of our atmosphere. Tho water vapor does not extend very high, clouds uover rising higher than ten miles abovo tho earth. Tho bluo streaks cast by clouds at sunset show that tho rod arises near the earth, whllo the bluo has Its seat very high up. Abovo our atmosphere tho sky has all the blackness of the darkest night. |
