Show HEIGHT OF OCEAN WAVES. General Misapprehension As to Their Enormous Size. A galo in the, open ocean will lash up tho waters into spray, and produce waves which seem of prodigious height to unfortunates in any small boat; but as "Nature" points out, few of our Impressions Im-pressions are more misleading. Dashed from their crests into tho troughs between, be-tween, wo say tho wavos ran "mountains "moun-tains high"; but the highest waves In Hrltlsh seas probably never exceed fifteen or twenty feot, nnd the greatest great-est height observed by Scoresby In tho waves of tho Atlantic was but forty-threo forty-threo feet. This is, of courso tho height of tho wavo from trough to crest, ond has nothing to do with the height to which spray wnter or stones may bo hurled when the waves break on shore. |
