Cornell, who was at the Astor house last week, was stopped by a ragged and unkempt panhandler pan-handler on Barclay street the other night, and asked to contribute a dime for something for the hobo's supper, says the New York Times. "Not a dime; not a cent, Sir!" ejaculated ejac-ulated the ex-governor. "Why, sir, you aro young strong and better abla to got your own living than I am. I've no sympathy with the lazy nor with the dishonest, who come to want through crime, sir." The panhandler, still Importuning, resented tno last stab, and replied: "True, my pants may be ragged, but, sir, they cover a warm heart, sir." |
