Although the board has been handicapped handi-capped by lack of funds to carry on Its work to tho best advantage, yet the progress that has been mado In Utah horticultural during tho past six years is remarked by many and is very gratifying grati-fying to tho members of the board. Through the special efforts of tho members of this board accurate Information Infor-mation has been disseminated regarding regard-ing tho standard varieties for market, the proper cultural methods, suitable soils and locations and tho most potent means of combating orchard pests. Largely as a result of tho efforts of the board the planting of orchard tracts has been placed upon a commercial basis so that tho products will be suitable for long distance shipment ship-ment or for storage to supply the late spring markets at home. According to tho report, Cache county is pre-eminently adapted to the standard sorts of winter apples as has been demonstrated by settlers here who have grown the very best of apples without a failure for the past twenty years. In'Cacho valley the farmer may safely proceed to plant out any of the following varieties of commercial apples: Jonathan, Rome Beauty, Ben Davis, Gano, Salome, Wlnesap, Wolf River, York Imperial, Wealthy and Rhode Island Greening. Other sorts would do well, but tho list above includes in-cludes enough of the leading market apples. Tho section of Cache valley that Is adapted to apple culture is not small, but Includes all the llrst and second bench lands from Mcndon on the south to Richmond on tho north. At present the production of apples In the valley is not one-tenth as much as is required for homo consumption. However, there is a growing' disposition disposi-tion to plant applo trees and the probability prob-ability is that large shipments of apples ap-ples will bq made from Cache valley within the next ten years. |
