Show EARTHQUAKE AT PARADISE Our Sister City Shaken quite Severely Thursday. morning about 2 o'clock. Mr. Robert James, manager of tho Co-op at Paradise, was in Logan Thursday and told of an earthquake that shook the town that morning about 2 o'clock. The shock was very violent and of quite lengthy duration. dura-tion. It seems that theic is no mistake about the matter, as a large number of the Paradise sleepers were widely awakened by chills chasing cacli other up and down their spinal columns, and subsequent developments made It necessary to grasp tho headboard tightly and lock their toes around tho footboard to keep from being dumped unceremoniously upon the floor. It is stated that the vibrations seemed to travel from east to west or vice versa. Mr. James was awakened by his wife, who Insisted that someone some-one was under the bed und the violent vio-lent rattling lent such a probability to his wife's statement that he promptly lunged out and made an investigation. Once on the lloor ho discovered that the whole house was shaking and then it dawned upon him that an earthquake was at the bottom of tho affair. Inquiries the next morning morn-ing proved the truth of his surmise, for various families reported practically prac-tically the same experience. Mr, James says that he experienced a most uncomfortable un-comfortable feeling at the time of the shock. Newspaper reports from Salt Lake state that tho shock was felt In that city and that It lasted probably tif teen seconds. The time Is given as 1:34 a. m. Ogden also felt the disturbance and In that city it was much more noticeable than In Salt Lake. In Ogden tljo night operators say the building shook to such an extent that they were frightened, and that) In a few minutes there were frequent calls from all over the city asking an explanation ex-planation of the phenomenon. The fact that the shock was felt slightest In the south seems to Indicate In-dicate that the origin of the. disturbance disturb-ance must have been In Cache Valley, for there Is no report of the shock having been felt north of here. Ob-seivo Ob-seivo Hyatt at Salt Lake attributes the quake to the peculiar weather conditions, but this can hardly be accepted ac-cepted by people in the vicinity of Paradise. It Is stated by scientists that there are many "faults" In the Wasatch range and that slips may come at most any time, and it Is believed be-lieved that the recent shock was caused by the sliding of the strata. Prof. Pederson of tho A. C. of U. who is thoroughly familar with geological formations throughout the mountains In this vicinity is said to have discovered dis-covered a fault in either Blacksmith Fork or Logan Canyon. It is known that tho whole of Cacho Valley has dropped in ages past'and It has been predicted by some who may or may not have scientific knowledge to back it up, that another ten-foot drop may be expected at some future .time. The exposed strata of tho Wasatch range show that a great eruptive force was In operation at sometime, and in settling there were many irregularities irregulari-ties which frequently terminated In "faults," which cause slips and consequent con-sequent earthquakes. |
