Show That Auditing Committee. After having been warjied by a Democrat who knew something of (ho unfortunate way In which tlo county rccoi ds had been kept, County Clerk Larson, as a means of piotecting himself, him-self, asked for an audit of ceitain books of former Court house oftlcials. The commissioners, deshlng to be fair, appointed a Democrat and Republican Re-publican as an auditing committee. Tlic gentlemen selected were considered consider-ed thoioughly competent and honest and they were the unanimous choice of the commissioners. The work of examination proceeded and it showed up linfavoiably for the Democratic olllclals whose books were being audited.. The auditing committee finished Its work and leported, and that llnal report re-port was of such a natuie as localise the Democrats to open their eyes and sigh. They were up against It, so to speak, and must devise ways and means of putting a different phase on the matter. During the holidays, ono of the auditors, the one appointed as a Democrat, left for California, and during dur-ing Ills absence it was decided tliat he is not a Democrat. Not only that, but the "onlv" the Democracy's mis-lcpiesentative, mis-lcpiesentative, scored this gentleman in a very vindictive manner for engaging en-gaging in tills work at all, accused lilm of lending himself to partisan trickery and a whole lot of such other rot as that peanut frequently engages in. During tliat gentleman's absence It was decided to continue the audit tlnough certain other books, and it having come to the eais of Itepubli-cans Itepubli-cans tliat t lie Democrats were not sallslled witli this absent gentleman as their lepresentatlveon that auditing audit-ing conunlttee.suggested to the Hoard of Commlssloneis 'that a third paity, a! Deinociat, be added to that com-mittee. com-mittee. Commissioner Darlc) acquiesced, ac-quiesced, and the name of Mr. Jos. Qulnney was suggested. The matter wasdiopped until a meeting was held last week. At this meeting It was leported that Mr. guinney could not serve. The Republican meinbeis then named l'iof. Ostlen, mathematician at the A. C. of I'., as the additional member or that committee. Commissioner Darley named Attorney I'. K. Keeler, but on a paity vote was defeated. The Democrats did not gel what they asked for but got exactly what they should hao,- an honest, fair and square gentleman of thorough capacity, and a gentleman reputed to boa Democrat. The Republicans have tried In every way to keep paitisanslilp out of this audit, and still have no deshe to make a paitKan matter out of It. However the Democrats are rapidly pushing the matter to a political Issue and are behaving as foollshl.v as a lot ot school children. Tin: Hki'imiuuan lias never caied to go into tills matter, preferring at all times 10 keep it undercover, and the advice of i idi high hi the Itepub - ' ii . . llcan party has been "do not drag this Into politics." Tiik Hr.fuii-i.ican Hr.fuii-i.ican paity regicts this unfortunate unfort-unate affair as Democrats do, and It Is the hope of every good citizen of tills county that a further audit will bring nothing more to light than the criminal crim-inal carelessness which Is already evident. The Democratic organ Is foolls bin its rantlngs at the Hoard of Commissioners and ridiculous In Its evident belief that l'iof. Ostlen will not leprcsent them honestly. |
