Show ' '. . I Farr Says he Js Not Giftlty. -'HmI In view of a conversation ' between the editor of this paper and Mr. Lit-clan Lit-clan Farr on Saturday, wo anticipate that this morning's issue of The Journal will contain a strong denial of Mr. Farr and Ids nfany friends ras to statements in the last Issue ofTiiK Rkpuiilican. Anticipating this wo havo the following to say In regard to the matter. In our conversation Saturday, Mr. Farr did strcnously deny ever saying that certain young men who' were guilty of ruining girls of this city "were not brought to justice for fear of discouraging the boys." Mr. Farr did not use any uncertain language In denying tills report, but Instead used language that tho law forbids, and for which many men would themselves have been arrested. Ho said the man was ,a coward, liar, hypocrite, and that he ought to be killed; in fact, that he would help beat him to death, and a whole lot of such rot. Mr. Farr asked for tho man's name and wo refused to give it.but stated lo the gentleman that " If you care to bring the matter to trial, the (gentleman who gave me this Information, promised promis-ed to go on the stand and swear to It, cite cases, evidence, etc." and we suggested sug-gested that if he really wanted to get at the matter, that was piobably the best way. Wc also told Mr Farr that the columns of our paper were open for any statement he cared to make. He replied that "your paper doesn't come out until after election and a statement state-ment wouldn't do me any good." Wc then told him that in order to give him a fair show, wo would say what wc had not then said to anyone else that Thk Rkpuiilican would be issued on Tuesday morning. That was practically tho end of the conversation. conversa-tion. THAT STATEMENT. The gentleman who told us that Mr. Farr while marshal once said certain cer-tain cases of bastardy f ''were not brotigltt to the attention of the law for fear of discouraging the boys," made this statement to us as far back as last J une or July and made It In casual conversation while discussing Logan's morality. There was no po-Itlcal po-Itlcal feeling in it thcie could not have been at that time and the fact """" -i .. j. ii- ,, , , ., tliat the gentleman spoko very lilgliiy I of Mr. Farr In other wujs, leads us t0 j believe that there Is no personal fee. Ing between the two. Wo said this to Mr.Farr In our conversation Saturday and also said to him that wo had heard him speak well of the person-who person-who made this statement. While our Informer made this state-ment state-ment several months ago, ho verified It a few days ago, and said he would swear t,o It If necessary, but naturally prcfencd his name to be kept out of thejness. Personally, we havo no doubt or the earnestness and truthfulness of our Informer, In-former, and have 1 mpllclt continence In the statement ho made. Wehac nothing to say of Mr. Farr further than this, that ho Is generally considered consid-ered a man of good character and rep. utatlon. (However, we tako the stand that a man who will make such a statement is not tho -right man for marshal in this city where wo are the guardians of hundreds qf students. The above was put in type early yesterday afternoon. About live o'clock Mr. Farr came to this olllce and requested us to state that. h branded our statement as false, AwMBI We then discussed the statement, fii f author, etc., and was still engaged In ' that discussion when our informant walked-in. Certain statements made led that gentleman to believe we were discussing the statement in question, and he then made known to Mr. Farr that ho was the person to whom Farr had made said statement. Thclrcon-.versatlonand Thclrcon-.versatlonand meeting was cordial and discussion sensible. Mr. Farr was certalnUhat he had never made s,uch a statement. The other gentleman was even more certain 'that he had, and related tho circumstances, and cases talked of at thatAImc. Mr. Farr admitted that ho might said It wasn't best to be too hard on the boys, but failed to recall having nsed the word "discourage." He insisted that ho had no jurisdiction in such cases, which ha9 never been questioned tho only thing touched on being the stated reason for not pushing the cases. The tlemen conversed pleasantly for some time and left the office, together. We present this whole matter In order to show tho authority back of our statement state-ment and in Justice to all concerned. 9 |
