A strange thing happened in this village recently during a lull in tho heavy rains, and It happened to ono poor, lono hen? and cnuscd her owner to gaze and wonder In astonishment. This particular hen In question has a brood of about twenty chickens which sho Is forced to scratch for and shel-tor shel-tor from hawks and do other things that aro necessary for motherly hens to look out for when chickens aro young. Well, It happened that ono morning tho rain stopped for n fow hours and tho ground was exceedingly soft and suscoptlblo to tho pedal extremities of all kinds of walking creatures, especially espe-cially hons. Mrs. Hen stnrted out to scratch for a fow choico worms nnd bugs. About an hour later hor ownor came into tho ynrd nnd paw her scratching on the ground and sup-posed sup-posed sho was covering tier chicks from somo passing hawk. Ho went up to her, but she did not start. And good reason, too; sho was stuck In tho mud up to her feathery brenst. Tho man, of courso, oxtrlcatod Airs.
