Show SENATOR. HANNA DEAD After an Illness oxtendlng over a period of about two months, Senator M. A. Hanna died at 6:40 p. m. Monday, Mon-day, at tho family apartments In tho Arlington hotel, Washington. For tho larit two days tho senator had not 'boon conscious, except at Intervals. Death camo peacefully, however, and when tho end came all the members of tho senator's family wero In tho room except ex-cept Mrs. Hanna, the senator's wlfo, nnd Mr. nnd Mrs. Dan Hannn. Mrs. Hanna had loft tho room only a fow minutes before to seek a moment's rest, and Mr. und Mrs. Dan Hanna had gono to summon her to tho senator's sena-tor's bedside. Word of tho senator's denth went ovor tho hotel llko n flash. Tho lobby was crowded and a scoro of frlonds were waiting In Mr. Dover's room. No attempts wero made to restrain grief. Senators Fairbanks, Scott and Kit-trldgo Kit-trldgo broke down. General Dick wept his sorrow at tho loss of a friend who had been a brother. Funeral services will bo held In tho scnato chamber Wednosday at noon, nt which tho president, cabinet, congress, con-gress, public ofllcials and friends will bo present. After the services special trains over tho Pennsylvania railway will carry tho body, the family and f i lends to Cleveland, where services ser-vices will be held cither at tho home of the senator or of his son, Dan Hanna, Han-na, on Friday afternoon. Senator H anna's full namo wns Marcus Mar-cus Alonzo Hannn, and ho was past CC years of age. Ho was born Sept. 2, 1837, In Now Lisbon (now Lisbon), Columbiana county, Ohio. His family removed to Cleveland In 1852. Senator Hanna was educated In tho common schools nnd In tho Western Reserve un!vor3lty nt Hudson, Ohio. After leaving school ho entored tho employ of tho wholesale grocery bouse of Hannn, Gnrretson & Co., of which his father was the senior member, nnd when his father died, in 18C2, Senator Hanna represented tho family's Interest Inter-est In the concern until 1SC7, when tho business wns closed up. Senator Hanna thon entered tho Iron and coal business as a membor of tho firm of Rhodes & Co., tho nnmo of tho firm being changed In ten years to M. A. Hnnna & Co., under which tltlo It still exists. Sonator Hanna was heavily Interested In tho lake carrying business, busi-ness, both In vessels engaged In the trade, and In tho construction of vessels. ves-sels. Ho was also. Interested In mines, and was president of tho Capln Mining Min-ing company of Lako Superior, fho Union National bank of Cleveland and the Cleveland City Railway, company at tho time of his death. He was a director di-rector of tho Union Pacific Railway company In 1885 by nppolnCmont of Prcsldont Clovoland. Mr. Hannn was active In Republican politics as far back as 1834, when he went to tho national convention from Ohio. He was also a member of the national conventions of 1888 and 189G. Ho fli st beenmo a national figure of prominence, however, In 1890, whon he directed McKInlcy's first campaign nnd became, chairman of tho national committee, a position ho held from 189C to his denth. Ho was regarded as tho most EagaciouB political manager man-ager In his party and has been a power In Its councils cvor slnco ho ns-sumed ns-sumed tho chairmanship. Senator Hanan went to tho senate first In 1897, when ho was appointed by Governor Bushncll of Ohio to fill tho vacancy caused by tho retirement of Senator John Sherman when the latter became secretary of stnto. In Jnnuary, 1898, Senator Hanna wns elected to fill tho short term ending tho following yenr, and wns also elected elect-ed for tho succeeding full term.
