James Conlon, a fourth worker, was taken from the manhole dead, and cine of the three rescued may not live. Conlon was first overcome and his tli-eo follows wont to his aid, one after af-ter another. Each was overcomo when he reached the bottom of tho ladder and tho four lay unconscious n tho slime when Cook and his men uirhed. Cook went down tho dark opening with a wot rponge In his teeth. His first offorts failed, but he went bick aga'n nnd fastened a ropo to one of the ujiccmsclous workers. Coming to tho surfaco again Cook got nn oxygen helmet and plunged down the manhole a third time. When nil of tho workmen had boen brought up, Cook climbed out and fell unconscious uncon-scious as tho bystanders cheered him. His condition Is sorlous. |
