Show FAMILY AFFLICTED . WITH HOOKWORM So Far at Known Is First Authenticated Authenti-cated Case In Utah Came From Georgia Ogden, April 12. Tho family ot T. A. Shuman, who camo to Ogden two weeks ago from Georgia, father, mother and ten children, are afflicted with hookworm, according to a re-port re-port made by Doctor A. A. Robinson who was called to tbo Shuman residence resi-dence In West Ogden to attend enso ot measles. Tho family was Immediately Immedi-ately placed In quarantine So far as known, this is the first authenticated case of tho disease thht has ever appeared In Utah. The family fam-ily appears to have beon afflicted wth the disease a number ot years before leaving Georgia. The father said that on account of tho severo treatment given In the south he had not submitted to treatment nor allowed al-lowed tho members of his family to bo treated. Dr. Robinson says ho first noticed the delicate appearance of each child in tho family and an investigation in-vestigation led him to tbo conclusion that every Inmate of tho household was afflicted with hookworm. It Is believed that tho chngo ot climate nnd proper treatment may effect a euro. Tho bookworm Is described as a worm about a hhlf inch In length having a threadllko body with a conical con-ical shaped head and a large bell shaped mouth, which Is surrounded by a horny capsule. Tbo mouth contains con-tains four hookllko teeth by wukh the worm fixes Itself to the membrane It lives In tho intestines. The worm Is hatched from eggs usually deposited depos-ited In muddy water which are taken tak-en into the body by tho drinking or Infected wator. The dlseaso Is also transmitted through tho bare feet nnd hands coming In contact with tho larvae. lar-vae. It causes a stato of inactivity amounting almost to stupidity In extreme ex-treme cascB and tbo patient sometimes some-times becomes so dormant that ho refuses to move. Dr. T. B. Deatty, president of the stato 'board of health, has been advised ad-vised of tho situation and Is expected to visit Ogdeitro. Investigate tho case. |
