Show REESE HOWELL OIESJT OGDEN Ogdcn, Mnrch 14 Hceso Howell a pioneer merchant and ono of tho most prominent residents of Ogdcn died at his homo 2349 Adams avenue of pneumonia. Although Mr. Howell has been confined to his homo most of tho tlmo since Christmas when he suffered suffer-ed a breakdown his condition was not considered serious nnd his death will be a great shock to his many friends nnd business associations . At his bedside when the end came were: his wife, two sons, Judge James Howell and William C. Howell How-ell and his nephew Joseph Howell Jr., who camo down from Logan Mr. Howell was born September C, 184S, nt Council Bluffs Iowa, and In 1S51 camo with his mother to Utah crossing tho plains with nn ox team. They located In AVellsvlllo Cache county whero Mr. Howell lived until 1869 when ho married Jennie Chnplow and moved to Kolton, Utah whero ho was first engaged In tho freighting business between Utah nnd Idaho points and subsequently In the mcrcnntllo business. In 1882 ho movod with his family to Ogdcn having purchased realty hero prior to his coming. Shortly after ho became associated with II. C. Tavey In tho mercantile business, under the name of Tavoy and Howell, How-ell, Ho purchased his partner's interest inter-est and conducted the business under his own name until ho became associated as-sociated with his son William C. Howell slnco which time the firm has been known as Reese Howell and Sans. Shortly after moving to this city ho commenced the building of tho Broom annex and has slnco then built the Reeso Howell block on Twenty-fifth street and otner buildings build-ings In various parts ot tho city. Mr. Howell belonged to no organizations organ-izations except tho Royal Arcanum. Ho wns not a member of any church and his religion consisted of doing good among his fellowmen. Ho was modest and unnssumlng, but no ono listened moro attentively to tho cry of distress than ho and nono wero more ready to glvo aid and assistance to those who wero In need. Besides his wlfo nnd two sons Mr. Howell Is survived by one brother nt present In Washington D. C.j nnd ono sister Mrs. Ann H. Burt of Brig-ham Brig-ham city. No arrangements have been mado for tho funeral pending word from Congressman Howell. |
