Show STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR UTAH gggg For tho benefit ot taxpayers and kkk for tho Interest of those who may kkk have relatives at the abovo named gkk Institution the writing ot a few items kkV gleaned while making a brief lnspec- gkk tlon of tho hospital may not be ui-. kgg ggV Inmates at the present tlmo ir.im- kkV engaging mechanics to do the whole kkV sl wards, and aro assigned such kkV apartments as will best suit their con- gkV dltton. It Is nothing short ot a kkV marvel to seo so many unfortunates gkV together and to cbsqrvo the order gkV and dec i-tim that 'a maintained. N'o ggV coercion appears necessary, the over- kkV seers and guards being carefully Be- ggV lectcd to handlo tho patients. There kH Is hardly an able-bodied person In tho ggV lust tutlon but what works In some kkV lino nnd appears to do so cheerfully. gH To Illustrate an appropriation ot gH $1500 was mado to placo n new ma- gH plo door In ono of tho wards, this In- gH eluded mechanical work. Instead of gH engaging mechan'c to do tho whole gH of tho work, tho patients under prop- ikH er direction did tho work and cover- jkH (Continued on page 5) kH STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL OF UTAH Continued from Page One ed the whole bIx wards Instead of one. All other work appears to bo conducted along tho snino lines such ns plumbing, etc. It s doubtful whether wheth-er many of tho inmates had such comfortable quarters before In the r lives, of course there nro no doubt exceptions. ex-ceptions. Spacious rooms nnd dormitories dorm-itories equipped with different articles arti-cles for tho r uso and amusement at lolsuro hours aro afforded. The food Is first class. The day that tho wrltor mado n visit, tho faro for dinner wns Irish stew, green peas, rndlshes, baked bak-ed potatoes, milk, with some of the finest bread nnd butter that a person per-son m'ght wish to cat. Every day C50 large loaves of bread are baked being mado by a thorough baker ond with a modern machine for mixing. Artisans of various kinds are among tho Inmates, plumbers, carpenters, masons and most any others that can be mentioned. There nre upwards of 400 acres of land belonging be-longing to the Institution, on which Is raised most everything, except wheat, to support tho largo number that has to be fed. Thirty-five cows are milked by the patients, a large number of hogs are fed; overalls, Jumpers mattresses and numerous other artlclesVre made. Tho female apartments generally aro trimmed as nicely as the averago home, sltt'ng rooms having curtains at the windows win-dows and pictures on tho walls, this of course woulU not apply to a few. A passing mention might be made of the lire drill that Is held each week. The patients within enjoy descending the fire escape. There is n lire hose on each floor of tho building. A word regarding ma'ntenanco which Includes everything, costs about thirty-eight cents per day. Space wia not permit to go Into a detailed report re-port of the Institution. As to the control nnd management they nro first class In every respect. With all respect to Dr. Caldor tho Impression tho writer received was that ho was almost exclusively classical, but before be-fore ray two hours trip was finished I found thnt ho was a thorough prac-t'cal prac-t'cal man cnlllng each inmate by their given names as he passed. Not In one Instance, in entering tho different dif-ferent departments did he call upon an overseer to show up tho workings of any department, tho dairy, the bakery, and In everything else ho was there, and hod familiarized himself him-self In every particular, and know ev ery detail. In fact ho Is one of the best detailed men that tho writer over met. Th's knowledge combined with his profession mnkes him an Ideal superintendent and ludlspen-sablo ludlspen-sablo as n public servant In that lino of work. In the absence of further parttculnrlzlng our readers should obtain ob-tain tho blennlnl report of this Institution Insti-tution for the year ending November 30, 1910. It Is understood that tho Governor takes a great Interest In this 'nstl-tut'on 'nstl-tut'on nnd hns done much for tho benefit of the inmates and for tho betterment of tho hospital. Fred Turner. |
