Murray McCarty, president of tho sophomoro class nt tho University of Utah was placed In nn embarrnsslng position yesterday by the mombers of tho freshmen class, nnd his supporters, sup-porters, in attempting to rescue him, were subjected to n soverc beating. According to reports the freshmen do not know the sophomores from the upper classmen, and, fearing to Incite In-cite tho wrath ot others than their natural enemies, they devised the scheme of stealing the president of the clnsj nnd lighting nil who attempted attempt-ed to befriend him. Tho plan is said to havo originated with Rakoff Anderson, An-derson, the diminutive mascof of tho freshmen. Itnkoff Is a Scandinavian and now to tho ways of this country, but his originality In devising mentis of torturo nnd his singleness of purpose pur-pose in carrying out military tactics aro to bo admired. McCarty was captured when ho left a chemistry examination nt 9:30 o'clock yesterday forenoon by about twenty freshmen, who took him without with-out assistance nnd without losing a man. He was first taken to the dormitory, dor-mitory, whero he was told ot his fate nnd prepared for It. First ho was stripped of his outer clothing and was then packed In a long white grain sack, which was closed with tho exception ex-ception ot a small opening for his face. Tho prisoner wns then taken to the foot of ono ot tho derricks that are being used by the P. J. Moron company in the construction of tho new administration building. He was (.Kd at the end ot one of the poles about fifteen feot from the ground and then started swinging. Then gathering their forces together, the freshmen sent word to tho sophomores sopho-mores that'they had their president. Of course the sophomores tried to rcscuo their hero and were hopWs's-ly hopWs's-ly beaten. McCarty was finally released at tho command ot tho president of the student stu-dent body, but it Is expected that 'tho fight will be renewed. |
