Show Is the Cause of Much Comment Wcareln receipt of the following letter which expresses the sentiments ot nearly everyone with regard to the recent action of the Bell Telephone compan: Lewiston, August, 17. 1008 Editok Looan Republican The county toll rate of the R. M. RelirTcl ephone company which went into effect on the 16th, Is the cause of serious comment by many of the subscribers sub-scribers of said company; It will ccr-talnlv ccr-talnlv work a hardship on the majority major-ity of them for many there are who are subscribers chiefly because thgir work takes them from home much of the time and the phone In their homes has been a boon to many win through necessity have employment In towns other than where they live. Take for Instance here ut the Lewiston sugar factory are men from all parts of the county who have phones in their homes for the sole reason that It brings them near to their families with whom they could communicate as often as they desired and keep in touch with home affairs, but being deprived of this privilege, It works a hardship, for there are but few1 laboring labor-ing men who can afford to pay for many toll talks during the month. My firm belief Is that the telephone company will loose more In phone rent than they whl ever make on these toll rates. My phone I consider now more of an aggravation than a benefit and while the toll rate lasts will have to turn my talk trade to Uncle Sato through his mall service. I understand the new moement meets the approval of the business men of the different towns; and why shuuld'nt ItV They are the only ones that It does not affect to any material extent. True, some of them may have occasion to pay out 10 cents 15 cents or perhaps 25 cents a year for out of town calls but any man In business ought to be able to stand that. 1 think I voice the sentiment of at least seventy-five per cent of the U. M. Bell telephone subscribers when I say that the company has made a mistake mis-take In establishing the toll rate In the county, I believe one subscriber struck It when he said "The Bell Telephone Company will have to enlarge its store-rooms and hire extra linemen and drays to take care of discarded telephones." Let us hope that It will reconsider and give us back free service., A. J. Cuutih. |
