Show V Peach Day at Brig- , ham Drew the Crowd; ' i But the Free Peaches Were Nothing to Rave About. Bountiful Beats Wellsville, . Brigham Citys "Peach Day" was a thorough success in at least one of the half dozen particulars-the particulars-the crowd was there. Twenty-five car loads of excursionists came from Salt Lake and Ogden, seven' from Milad valley and eight front Cache Valley. These, with the hundreds who drove into the city made a crowd of visitors numbering probably 7,000 of 8,-000. 8,-000. The crowd was there alright, but ns for freo peaohes, free "everything," "ev-erything," there wasn't much doing. The peaches dished out were about the measliest and greenest that could hove been scraped together, and there was no great quantity of these in evidence, though there was plenty plen-ty of fine fruit for sale. Members Mem-bers of the Commercial Club said they had bargained for fine peaches to be given away, but the cupidity of the producers led them to bunco the club and the people. So far as free melons, grapes, etc., we haven't yet heard of many who came in on the deal. The free rides from the O. S. L. station up town cost 25 cents each way and over a street that was dust a foot deep. When a breeze came up in the afternoon the absence of the sprinkling that might have been done was particularly noticeable. The program was carried out to fair advantage and the crowd was handled remarkably well considering the size of the town. Tho edibles provided were-really first-class and after tho crowd once got to them it was O. K. Elegant prizes were given for the best exhibits of peaches. Peach day was held just ten days too late, according to those who know. Had the big time been pulled off a. little earlier there would have been more and better peaches. Tho crowd present pres-ent was n big and jolly one, and despite the several shortcomings (which will probably be remedied remed-ied next year) there was little kicking. Wellsville Defeated. In the baseball game between Wellsville and 'Bountiful teams, tho Cache Valley, bunch was defeated de-feated by a score of 10 to 8. In the 5th inning ther-scoro stood 6 to 0 in favor of Bountiful, but in the next inning Wellsville ran up tho score, but in the end fell down. . f |
