C Santiago de Cuba care Postmaster New York Dear Professor Here Is a surprise for you ou as great perhaps as when I used to come to class without my lesson I have thought of you many times since I have been in inthe inthe inthe the service and several several times I have started to write but every time something something something some some- thing has come up to postpone it until until until un un- til this evening When I first enlisted I went to Mare Island and spent three months in training From there thero I went to San Diego by boat and stayed there ten days San Diego is the Marines Marine's paradise par adise and I was in hopes that I would spend the winter there but no such luck I was loaded on a tourist car bound for Philadelphia and we traveled tray trav Bled from the Mexican border to the Canadian from the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic It was some trip an and lasted ten days We Ve passed through Kansas City Chicago Detroit under the Detroit river into Canada Buffalo Wilkes Barre and into Philadelphia We were a dirty tired crew when we landed landed landed land land- ed and we thought that we would b be bethere bethere there for a couple of weeks anyway but no such luck Street cars were waiting for us at the station and we were taken to the navy yard anc and marched aboard a transport We Ve had no idea of where we were going but thought that we were on our way across the pond We spent five da days dayson on the water and then we were landed at Deer Point bay Cuba It was a hard tiresome trip butis but bui there is no rest for the wicked so w we we unloaded ship you would be surprised to know how much can be packed in a ship and started to build our campIt camp It was so o hot that our lungs kind of dried up uI but we e had to build that camp before dark so all hands were kept busy In the short time the tents were only half haIr staked and that night nigh it rained In the states we five would l' l call it a n cloudburst We Ve looked like drowned rats the next morning but butaU all aU hands were busy at day break and before night the tents were up and the stores landed I knew it would be some job to get the camp ship shape but I did diel not know that it would take tape weeks weel but it did The ground had to tobe tobe be skinned trenches dug around the tents galleys and mess halls has built stores checked up and stored away and a hundred and one other things As was natural we expected a rest after all an this work but we had to Continued on Page 5 Column 4 SEASON SUCCESS IF UTAH DEFEATS Continued from Page 4 Col Column mn 5 start in a heavy routine that kept u busy from before beCore sun up until 3 30 in inthe inthe inthe the afternoon After two months cf d this routine we were ordered to Guantanamo City and now we ace are camped on a large sugar i just about half haIr a mile from the city cit The regimental headquarters are at Santiago I have no idea how long we will willbe be hero here here but from what I have heard no more marines are going to tc France The last Salt SaIt Lake Lalm paper I read said sad that Utah had a great team and were strong contenders for the Rocky Mountain Mountain Moun Moun- tain taro championship this year My best wishes are with the fellows and I hope that they are even better than what th the papers say they are I am anxiously waiting the report about the A. A C. C and U. U of U.
