Show WHY NOT LET I PEOPLE VOTE? 1 Southern Utah Paper Ex- I presses its Opinion. I Itlchflolil Uuaitr M According to tho Salt Lako papers H an effort Is being made by the Alnmnl H of tho University to havo Governor H Cutler call an extra session of the leg- H islaturo to consider tho mattor of tho H consolidation of tho Agricultural Col- H lego and tho Stato University. Their action Is based on tho majority report H of tho commission appointed by tho H last legislature to consider the mattor H of consolidating tho two schools, which H report favors consolidation. Tlinnntl. H tion being circulated recites tho fact H that It will save two yeais of tlmo In M getting the matter before tho peoplo H In tho form of an amendment to tho stato constitution This may bo true, H but what of It? It is a matter that H requires tlmo. Thoso who aro of the H opinion that consolidation is tile ono LH great desireablc thing on earth should H be willing to wait a llttlo while and H lot the matter be thoroly discussed. M The killing of such an Institution as M tho Agricultural College Is uo light matter. Consolidation means death M to tho Logan Institution and tho old M saw thaf'wo will be a long tlmo dead" M applies' Just as well to the A. C. U. as M to humahlty. It Isn't a question that M wo can dccldo now.and then If we tlnd LH in a few years wo aro wrong we can H resurrect tho A. 0. U. It means sure M death to the Agricultural college, and -H whether that Is a desireablc thing or H not requires considerable discussion. M "Call the legislature together and it" M will save tho state $140,000 in approp- M rlatlons" Is the cry (if the Salt Lake H follows who arc uiglng consolidation, M To get tho legislature together will M cost tho state $10,000. Then It the M people-of the state turns down consoll- datlon tho appropriations of $140,000 'M plus tho $10,000 will maku tno stato M pay out $150,000. H Tho projectors of this scheme of calling the legislature together seem to tako it for granted that tho action of the legislature In putting tho qbes- H tlon beforo tho people ends the matter H and that tho people will Just fall over H each other In votlog for tho killing of H tho college at Logan. Maybo tho H people will not tako kindly to the H proposition. What then? Would it H not bo wlso to lot the matter rest uu- H til the regular session of tho leglala- H turo and let the people have all tho H light possible Irom discussion of tho H subject for two, or ten years If necces- H sary. Why does Salt Lako want tho H Agricultural College? Utah always H points with pride to her many and H varied Institutions of learning. Wo x H can't possibly have too many schools. H If tho Tnlverslty people want to add H agricultural to their studies, and In- H stltuto an experiment farm on tho H twcnty-llvo acres of laud added to H their possessions by the government, LH Logan and all other parts of the stato H will bo perfectly willing. From this H distance It looks like Salt Lako would H like to absorb the state. GctanAgrl- H cultural school of your own if you M want it and let tho Logan school alone. The A. C. V. turns out graduates that M suit Uuclc Sam and that Is proof M enough that tho school Is filling the M measure of Its creation. Go to, Alum- |
