Only three countries the British Empire, tlic Chinese Kmplre and the Itusslan Kmplrc-hac unquestionably a greater population than the United States. France, with Its arlous possessions, pos-sessions, has only about the same population pop-ulation as this country. The North, as dclined by the census, has about tho same area as the South, and almost twice the population. Tho population of places called cities ranges from New York city with 3,127,202 to Rainy Lake city with 7. Tho arbitrary dellnltion of cities, as adopted by the census oillce, is all Incorporated In-corporated places having at least 2,500 Inhabitants, and also all unincorporated unincorporat-ed New Kngland towns of llko size and not containing an Incorporated place. In continental United States two-fifths two-fifths of the population live In cities and threc-tlfths In tho country.
