Schaub, the retired city surveyor, sur-veyor, was displaced not because of any dissatisfaction with him or his work, but for the reason that he held the office two terms and Is at present county surveyor. It was considered advisable to pass tho pic around a little, henco Mr. Hansen's appointment. appoint-ment. The Mayor and various coun-oilmen coun-oilmen have expressed themselves In the most favorablo way toward Mr. Schaub as a man and a surveyor. They appreciate his work and there is no single false note In tho gcuerat praise. Mr. Schaub rather resented the change just at a tlmo when the office is supposed to be somewhat worth the while, $500 a year, but when given every assuranco that the change was political not personal nor from dissatisfaction, he accepted It with good grace. Mr. Schaub is unquestionably unques-tionably an engineer of excellent capacity and leaves the office with no blur on his official escutcheon. During Samuel Holt's term of office as watermastcr, he served tho people well. Ho gave more time than tils salary warranted and he handled the trying difficulties incident to this office, In such a way that the least Inconvenience, In-convenience, the least umplcasant-ness umplcasant-ness and tho best scrvlco possible under un-der tho circumstances was given. That he leaves the office with the good will of the people testifies to his generally satisfactory efforts. Thk Rki'uhlican has ever found Mr Holt ready to do the right thing and is pleased to give him credit for his worthy works. In his displacement he simply gives way on political grounds. |
