Show I THE SUGAR DUTY . I During the recent visit of Hon. ' David Eccles to this city, he ex-I ex-I pressed himself as being strong- y opposed to any reduction of j the sugar duty. He states that I Utah will shortly be manufacturing manufac-turing three times as much sugar as it consumes and the factories in this region will therefc re be under the necessity of finding an I outside market. A reduction in the tariff will therefore interfere, j with the price of sugar and there-'. I by with the benefits now being' derived. ! A great deal has been said as j to the impoverished condition of ! Cuba, and while it is well to lend reasonable aid to the people of ' foreign lands, nevertheless our j own citizens should re ei . e first ! consideration. Cuba chose to be-t be-t come au independent republic, as it had a perfect right to do. But why should it participate ia the benefits of United States citizenship citizen-ship when it bears none of the (burdens? The men who pay the j taxes of and who would be com-i com-i polled to fight the battles of the j Union are the ones that should j be considered. As well might the j United States legislate m Liver j of India and against its own sons, i as lo injure the business intoi t Vu of the latter in favor of Cuba. "VVe believe, a mistake ..vil-a made if the duty is removed. ! The sugar trust and not the people peo-ple or the small owners w ill t et the benefit. It is even doubtful if the people of Cuba will be aid-1 ed by such action. . i |
