Show 1 Work on West Canal j Mi. L P Petersen, the enterprising enter-prising Smithfield agriculturalist, agricultural-ist, is soliciting stock subscriptions subscrip-tions for the new west side canal. The purpose is a most laudable one and it is to be hoped his ef -f forts will meet with success. The canal has cost over one hundred thousand dollars and is bonded for between seventy and eighty thousand dollars. It is finished through the most difficult 'portion' 'por-tion' of ;the route and it -is estimated esti-mated by the r . rrgin eers iwho-have iwho-have r'arefully surveyed the balance bal-ance of the ditch, that $10,000 will be ample to complete the work. All who take stock will be ' given time to complete their payments, and the stock will represent a perpetual water right. On the Both well canal in Box Elder . county, the entrance fee is $25 and the water costs from $1 to $1.50 per acre each year forever afterward. On the Cache county west side canal the en- j trance fee is but $5- and a small assessment on the capital stock will pay all expenses each year. Eventually the shareholders will pay up the indebtedness and own the canal. Their expenses ex-penses thereafter will be nominal. AH who own land under the canal should subscribe for a good block of the stock, in order that the canal may be completed this year. It will be far better forj the people to own the ditch than ! for it to pass into the hands of , capitalists I Mr. Peterson has been a most earnest worker for the construe-. tion of the canal, having himself, invested $1400 therein . He has : a fine farm of 600 acres west of Smithfield, and last year netied $1500 from the worked portion thereof. |
