Show I TRAGEDY AT RAWLINS. 1 Drunken Groceryman Murders Sheriff j and Prominent Citizen. j At Rawlins, Wyo. Monday night, i Frank Keefe, a grocery man, shot and killed Thomas King and City Marshal John Baxter. Keefe had been drinking for several days and had gotten into a number of quarrels. The shooting occurred at the rear of his own store, which is located on the corner of Front and Fifth streets, where he fired several shots just for fun. There were a number of men across the street east of his, place, but because of his bad reputation no one would look around the corner of the building for fear of falling a victim to his gun play. City Marshal Baxter, who heard the shooting, came running through the crowd, crossed the street to the rear of the store and broke the lock, letting the door swing open. No sooner had he done this than Keefe fired and Baxter fell to the sidewalk. Thomas King, who was standing near, stepped to Baxter's aid when he fell, and Keefe fired a second shot striking King in the left breast and the bullet pierced his heart. v Keefe is in jaiL He has always been considered a desperate character while drinking. King is a railroad man of high standing. Baxter has been on the police force only a few months, but has a reputation for being one of the most daring officers in the country. |
