Show CharCM '. Management of Wrecked Steamer Islander. Evidence of rather sensational character char-acter was brought out at an inquiry into the loss of the steamer Islander at Victoria, B. B., Wednesday. Dr a' W. Phillips who lost his wife and daughter in the disaster, said he could find no life preservers in his sta'eroom, and when he did find them in the cabin there was nobody to assist or instruct them how to put them on. He was not aroused, and went out because his wife heard a noise and was uneasy. When they reached the deck all the boats and rafts had left, and they were drawn down with the boat. He cam to the surface again, but his wife aud daughter did not. W. G. Preston, also of Seattle, testified testi-fied that the boat in which he left the ship only contained fourteen persons, one of whom was a fireman. They did not pick up others, as their boat was leaking and they were not oarsmen. The only indication that the captain was intoxicated was his action in waving wav-ing a farewell to some of his friends on the wharf at Skaguay with his hands and his actions in an m-,n, ,of It was also charged that the engi-neer engi-neer was drunk. |
