Show . Beet Experiments, 1897. Bulletin No. 52, Division of Chemistry, Prof. II. W. Wiley, chief, has jusl been issued by tho government. It is a special government report on the beet sugar industry of the United States, and shows that the richest beets were grown on irrigated land in the far Western States, but the immense expense of irrigation ir-rigation and tho scarcity of tabor in those States will probably curtail their production. Wisconsin is also well in the lead, and the two factories projected for that State should meet with success. The same may be said of Now York and Michigan, tho equalizing winds from the lake being a very favorable factor in both theso States. ; New Jersey, . Pennsylvania Pen-nsylvania and Ohio show moderately Rood results, the factories in theso States should succeed. ' This shows that the Western irrigated land is the best for sugar beets ko it is 'no wonder we are making tho industry auch. a success. The expense of irrigation irriga-tion is not so great as would appear from tho report but by it tho farmers are insured in-sured against A loss of crop through drought. They can rogulato tho growth ni beets and produeo u better crop with more sugar s There is by no means n scarcity of labor I10V0. Much of tho pntieular hand work in dono by boys who are exports at the business. They do the work well and mnko money at it. Under favorable conditions this crop will soon be a most important one on tho irrigated farms of the west. 11 1 ( Tho school teachers aro holding sessions ses-sions this week arranging ,plana for' next ECason's work.
