Show Moses Thatcher is the most widely talked of man in the State. He has been dropped from the quorum of the Apostles and is running for the United States Senate on the strangest platform ever sent, out. The Herald, Tribune nfid Argus are working for him against the church while the News opposes his candidacy for these leasons: "Only last year this same individual was u candidate for the same ollice, yet not a woid of opposition to him appealed editorially in the News. Why? Ikcause he stood upon n different platform then, one which assailed no Chinch, nor thrcatcnel any clash between Church :ind State. Why does the News oppose op-pose him this year? for the reason, and absolutely no other, that he stands upon a platform which, fairly interpreted, means nothing more nor less than war against a religious society." When a church is attacked it has the right to fight back and work for its own protection. 1 (e has been one of the most beloved men in the church and many will wonder at this parting of the ways which has seperated him from his quorum. It has caused much anguish and soirow and we cannot can-not tell wheie it will end. |
