Show RAISING "BEETS. What a Practical Ear-mer Ear-mer says. A BANNER Rlil'RESGNTATlVli Interviews Mr. Win. Bone Jr. on this subject. What do you think of tho beet industry? The beet Industry Is nil right. What kind of land do you consider-tlio most suitable? Naturally loatrHthuul. Heavy clay laud is not so good fany kind of crop, and consequcntllioypo gocd for beets. The only trouble with light sandy land Is that it is too weak, it requires an Immense, amount of manure This kind of land, however, It well manured, will raise good beets. How would you prcprro the l.mdV That depends upon tho kind of Inud with beets as much as with any other kind of crop. As far us light loamy land is concerned, I believe that it is ns well to plow It in the spring as In tlio fnll, though witli some laud both fall nnd filing plowing would be of great advantage, that is it would raise better beets If plowed In tho fnll nud again in the spring. Heavy laud should always bo fall plowed. Tho harrowing should bo well done, but tlio soil should not b too finally pulvciiscd, as in such a enso the least shower will naturally cause it to set too much, preventing tho young sprouts from coming out of tlio gionml. What is your Idea of iriigating beets? I do no think they can havo too much water. A great deal depends upin tho season ami tho land too. 1 would not water them until thoy show that they need it the first time. In naturally light laud they will stand watering pietty early. They should have nt least two good cultivations befoie they are watered at all. In rcgant to tho Inst watering my idea is with them the same ns with any other crop. If you lot au crop wither and dio it is not good for anything. It naturally looses its strength and vitality. Water will not stop tho beets fiom rlpcnli'g, that Is unless un-less the laud is wet and clayey and of con r pen person should know better than to water such land lalo in tho season Ileets that hae been well watered will not be affected nearly so much by the late storms as those that have not been well watered. What do you think about storing lietjlB? I dontknow about tho etorngo principle. Tlier is u vast amount ol extin labor attached to that. I nm satHllod that to make a success of storing stor-ing we will hao to go to some expense to muke n 'pecial place for this purpose. pur-pose. What do you think of alkali lands for beets? My experience is that beets need somo'nlkali, but I do not think, that very strong alkali land is good for them, There is naturally moie or less alkali in all our laud unless It Is the light, loamy soil. The greater part of our bottom land I think is too tlrong witli alkali for beets. There Is no nuoation, however, that tlio high ildges i unuing through our bottom lands would mako excellent land for this crop What Is your Idea about manuring the laud? Beets like manure. Allourland needs manure for beets. Ofcourson person can go to an extreme, but us a rule nil our lauds need manuring. Thero Is ono thing more about preparing land for beets. I nm sure that many of our peoplo tramp their laud too much. Some of I', becomes packtd veiy heavy before tlio beetB nre pill. In. After- the beets havo come up the land cannot be cultivated too much. |
