Show 0 v THE GRIND They call him a grind because he studies most of the day and night He is not a mixer so does not enjoy being with the boys after supper The girls laugh at him instead of with him so he does n not t go with them In the class room he thinks o of them merely as a part of the natural sur sur- His people have always had a fixed purpose ahead to which they struggled struggled struggled with every atom of strength His father had br brought up a large family and has had to work early and late to keep the children clothed and fed His mother has always had the desire to learn but as she received received re reo re- re but little education while young and has little time to read now her desires are kept smoldering But she has by her enthusiasm burned nto the minds of her children the ambition to become well educated men Ilen grind used to walk several niles isles to the high school in town very day After being graduated here he taught a school two years nd saved every cent possible Then rhen he went away to college While there he has done his utmost to learn his lessons well He will never be a great man in the money-making money sense but he will become a deep scholar and thus fulfill the ambitions of his mother mother his his only sweetheart His ideal is perfection in learning lessons When the examination papers papers papers pap pap- ers come back the other students with curling lip call him a grind But this proof of his ability brings a passing gleam of happiness to the tired features of the grind He has never had an easy time and he does not know that he could enjoy going to dances and shows He does not know the joy of letting lessons lessons lessons les les- sons go until examination time draws near and then cramming His only recreation is football where he sees men struggling to win Heres Here's to the grind unpopular unlovable unlovable unlovable un un- un- un lovable but withal in deadly earnest University Missourian |
