B Here is what he has to say about B the war and the Phillippincs. B Senator William M. Stewart of B Nevada called at Republican H headquarters today aud said he B had decided to vote for President B McKinley, Se made a statement H in part as follows : B ''The United States went to war H with Spain urged on by the Dem- B ocratic party. The popularity of B the war was such that Mr. Bryan H' joined the &rmy. The war was K successful; a treaty of peace was H entered into whereby the United B States agreed to pay Spain $20,- HB 000,000 and accept the sovereign- B ty and public property of Spain in Hj the f hilippne archipelago. There H was opposition to the ratification B of the treaty. Mr. Bryan came B to Washington and persuaded his B Democratic friends to vote for the V treaty and it was through his in- H fluencc that the treaty was finally HI J " - -- ' " iai " - - ratified. It then became the duty of the United States to maintain law and order and protect the lives and properly of all residents in the islands, wnither natives or foreign born. The United States at the time of the ratification of the treaty held military possession of Manila and immediately after such ratification ratifi-cation nssumed the sovereignty of the islands.
