academy of Beaver won the University ity of ot Utah Invitational High school track and field meet with a score of or thirty-nine thirty points as compared d with seventeen for the Salt Lake high the nearest competitor The men from Murdock were here to win vin and were I II I prepared to do more hard work than any other team After the first three events had hadeen been een run off it was freely admitted that the meet would be won by Mur Mur- dock This one effected the interest in the meet not in the least One could not ask for a better better better bet bet- ter series of athletic exhibitions than those performed by the high school students Saturday Four high school state records were smashed and two of them so comI completely completely completely com com- that it is doubtful if they will I go again for a score of years Probably th the most spectacular fete performed on the University of Utah campus In the history of athletics was the leap of six feet and two inches in the high jump by Larsen of the Dixie high school Larsen Is not a big fellow himself He stands five feet and ten i inches ches tall talland talland talland and weighs about pou pounds ds When the bar was raised to its greatest height for Larsen to go over it Happy Van Pelt the elongated varsity jumper jump jump- er stepped up and walked under it without ducking his head in the slightest slight slight- Slight Slight-I est degree degre When Larsen went over It he could have walked directly under under under un un- un- un der It with a stiff hat on and never moved the bar Another event which called forth a performance almost equally as splendid splendid splendid did was the yard hurdle race in which Gunn of the Murdock team made raade th the new record of twenty-five twenty and four-fifths four seconds This record not only cut away under the old high school record but Is two-fifths two of a second faster than the college record of the state The two other records to be beaten I were the pole vault and the yard i f dash Fuller of Ogden lowered the quarter mile mUe record by a fifth of a second and Durham of Murdock cleared clear clear- ed the pole vault at feet fe-et which is three Inches better than the former record Nor were the events In which rec I IThe s fell the only ones of interest The three thousand enthusiasts who saw the meet were kept on their fe feet t a large part of the time by the intensity of the competition It must be remembered however that the track was in beautiful condition condition condition condi condi- tion and the wind strong from the south giving an advantage to the runners runners run run- run 1 ners which they seldom have for breaking records In the yard ard dash Gurr of Murdock Murdock Murdock Mur Mur- dock and Hartman of Springville both covered the stretch in ten seconds flat fiat which equals the state record in both the hig big school and te to varsity division This race is usually the most stirring of any track track meet and around it centers more interest than perhaps any other event unless it be bethe bethe bethe the relay The Springville high school r renowned renowned re- re for its sprinters was reported as having a ten second man in this I event These reports were confirmed confirm confirm- I ed by men who had seen him run so that the event was practically con- con to him Murdock however had two men both of whom had been Continued on Pa Page Pace e 3 I MURDOCK ACADEMY WINS STATE MEET Continued from Page 1 doing great work in the sprints and the crowd was looking for a great race In his heat of the Hartman did it in ten seconds fiat flat while Williams the winner of the other heat required ten and two-fifths two seconds to do it Hartman was pushed closely In his heat by Gurr of Murdock but no one supposed that he would lose the final On the start of the final however he permitted the two Murdock runners runners run run- ners Gurr and William WilHam to get off offIn offin offin in front of him He made a great race from behind but was unable to overtake and pass either of the fleet Murdock runners Gurr finished first in the splendid time of ten seconds flat fiat and was wap immediately immediately im im- im mediately heralded as one of the fastest fastest fast fast- est men in the st state te In the yard dash Gurr permitted of the Salt Lake team team to lead him for about yards and and then trotted in ahead of hi him so easily that the crowd picked the Murdock man manas manas manas as a winner of the also In the finals however Hartman the Springville man whose reputation had hadi been darkly clouded by his defeat defeat in in inthe inthe the shot away in the lead at the crack of the gun and won at the tape b by the biggest margin of the day Although three other schools finish finish- finished ed with a higher score there was not nota a team on the field which deserves more genuine praise than the one from Dixie high school at St. St George Two lonely little fellows came up from the farthest south town in the state and ran away with two first places and a second Larson the high jumper was one of the Dixie boys and of course got his share of the praise deserved by his great jump The other other other oth oth- er boy however was about the lest iest man on the field and should be remembered His name is Milne and he can run At th the beginning of the mile race he was unknown Unlikely looking and poorly equipped he walked up to the starter to make his drawing for position on the track He Ile got a good place but was so nervous he could not remain on his marks He made two false starts and for each one was set back two yards When the race opened he was not considered All AIl eyes were upon Pau of the L. L D. D S S. S and l of Mur Mur- dock These men took up p their places near the front of the line on the first first lap and apparently were there to stay and fight for first place Milne was content to drop into the middle of the line somewhere and wait for the time to sprint On the last lap when everybody was wondering whether Paul or Mc- Mc would win the Dixie man unwound unwound unwound un un- un- un wound a killing sprint which could not be kept up to by the leaders and Dixie won the race In the half mile he played the same game but lost at the tape by two feet to La W inward Winward the great Payson runner In the last f forty yards of this race Milne came up from ninth place to second In the quarter mile race Ralph Fuller Full Full- er of Ogden high school one of Lou Romneys Romney's boys went off like a shot at the gun and led all the way to the tape It was a beautiful race and with the wind at his back Fuller Full Full- er came down the last stretch with enough speed to set up a a. a new state record The relay race which closed the meet was as spectacular a thing as was seen during the day Murdock l ha had the best team in the race and was picked by nearly everyone to win On the start however the Murdock Murdoch man who was altogether the fastest man on the marks marIes stayed set while the others got twenty five yards down the stretch He thought the start w was s spoor poor and expected the starter tg call the runners back When the starter told him to go ahead it looked as though he lie was hopelessly beaten bu buhe buy but buthe he lie was game and went atter his men mea He simply tore after the other men who were rods ahead of him and at atthe atthe atthe the end of his he lie had gained nearly nearly nearly near near- ly all of the lost time back The next Murdock runner caught up a little littlemore littlemore more and the third one took the lead by about a foot On the last relay Gunn the Murdock hurdler was matched against Collier the second best 1220 man of the d day y It looked good for the Salt Lake team but Collier Collier Col Col- lier Ifer was unable to beat Gunn and to the entire satisfaction of the crowd the Murdock team took the race t i |
