Show funds for more pay for teachers being asked for by school district superintendent 0 truman swallow left this week to attend a general meeting ot of superintendents and clerks of 0 the state school board association state department of education for or the purpose of getting more funds to outlying districts of bt the state td enable them to get teachers this year mr swallow also went to see what teachers may bo be obtained for school year 1942 43 because of the all out war effort of the nation and the high wages that are offered in defense plants it will be hard bard this year to obtain teachers at the low wage they have been getting in the smaller and poorer pooler distri districts ets superintendent swallow stated that the bigger and richer districts will take the teachers from districts such as kane county A committee representing the society of su superintendents perin ts parent teachers association and many civics clubs of tho the state composing twenty tour four people spoke in conference with governor herbert D maw and each reporting the need in this section of the state tor for the greater aid lor schools the committee tiled filed with the governor petitions and resolutions from approximately organized danli ed groups of people throughout the state these petitions represented some six thousand individuals all ot of whom expressed a desire that the governor do whatever was in his power to aid school districts at this time the governor stated staled he ha had already investigated tile the statutes to le termine it if ho be was authorized to take lake money out of the state general und tuni for foi the distribution to school districts but could not find any authority the statutes gives dihe governor or of the state to make such transfer tian ile he keegl keenly feels the situation districts are placed in by having employees leave the service for work in other fields and committed himself to work with a committee appointed by tb the association to work out a proper solution for tile the prom prema a nen nency c y to school districts in the patter of state stale aid tor for schools for the purpose of hearing a report from tho the committee and to organize committees to work on the proposals tile the dellol i people of the state want to present to the legislature the general meeting has haa been called in salt lake city TWO WAYS OF OBTAINING FUNDS FUND 9 superintendent swallow said there were two ways of obtaining these funds first legislature must change laws that say taxes taken for education when they reach leach a certain figure tire the bhe balance goes into the state general fund and cannot be used only on ly through other channels which la Is approximately two or three million dollars annually it will le be impossible and Is not legal to obtain any ally funds from this unless tho the law Is changed selmond Self Selo fond ond funds can be obtained froni from unclaimed accounts left in banks by people baio ibave died or for aitor somo some reason have not claimed their ac accounts countz these accounts are taken over by the state and are the property of the state but up until now have been just left in the bank of the account HIRK LOCAL there will be a shortage ot of teachers year especially in the awer paid districts where tead teachers herB will go into higher paid districts the school board in kane kan e county those qualified locally a chance to iti the person tp go to budimer im e r t J alti cudei iri swallow said the coara toara board feels that the people want k uphold tead teaching hing standards to insure best education I 1 possible regardless ot of the problem facing them this year in obtaining teachers under the present set up the teachers pay in the kano kane county school district will be less leas or there will have to be less teat teachers liers because of the number of at people leaving the county for defense jobs thus decreasing enrollment roll ment of students in the schools funds are determined by the enrollment ot of students in school |
