Show education meeting held saturday eve many measures which will benefit both the schools and the teachers of utah were enacted by the U utah t a ii state legislature which has just convened said senator J W thornton thor to of provo who in ill company with dr J R mahoney instructor instruct ol of economics of the university of utah salt lake city and H parley kilburn president of the U E A of logan were in kanab saturday april 10 tle men were touring the state in the interest of the U E A an organization senator thornton said which was responsible for much of the good legislation regarding educational cat ional matters which had been passed if legislation for schools goes on oil school people must do it and they must send friends to the state legislature A teachers retirement remen t measure was enacted which provides that per year a small monthly per cent of each teachers salary he be set aside as a fund after thirty years of teaching a teacher can retire and receive a monthly income for example a teacher whose salary was 1400 would upon retirement receive a monthly sum of af 50 there is more money for kane county in the coffers of the state than ever before there is the 25 per capita allotment and an other 2 per capita tor for each high school student and 5 6 from the fund the early allotment of the 25 per capita of relieved many dis tracts from the necessity of borrowing money to contin ue their activities kane countes coun tys portion of this al is in the course course of remarks made by dr mahoney prom trient utah educator the school is the most important public function the people have it is the duty of the older people to see that the younger gener generation gets epa ed sen sch ool districts lie he said were created to provide for the education of the children eving in the di district distrct utah has an educational system to be proud or of it is much better than most states however we have room for improvement and have been handicapped on account of finances dr mahoney said there was no reason why kane county should not have as good as salt lake cy or ogden utah still li has as school loins lems unsolved as some dis dia tracts get twice as much of the state money as others at the last session of the legislature two educational bills were passed which pro vides tor for constitutional amendments these meas ures sat up a uniform school system if adopted in 1938 by the voters they will go into effect the first of 1939 these educational measures would greatly benefit uhe ahe smaller districts and give the state school board the right of distribution for Por the welfare and interest of the young people must see to it that these constitution al amendments are passed dr mahoney had just re turned from washington D 0 he said the pletcher fletcher bill which is at present be fore congress is a momen tous measure which asks that the national govern ment take a hand in aduca tion up to the present the problems of education have been left up to the Jil individual states tile educational standards in the southern part of the anted states and in many segregated districts are no low and it Is thought that by the enactment of a feder al measure and tile the use of federal funds standards in these states can be raised |
