Show new ew air air I 1 view view knows shows revival in mercur area are A N T V 0 low courtesy western air express history does doea not very often repeat itself in mining usually when a mine or a district la Is worked over once it very seldom comes back when an ore body Is mined it la Is gono gone and there la Is no second crop not so with the mercur district as the accompanying now new and striking aerial photograph shows this photo was taken in september 1939 ot of the camp which five years ago was a ghost town its huge dumps miles of tunnels and a few remaining building walls were mute evidence of the days gone by when the district was a humming mining community supporting approximately 2500 persons today mercur is well along the comeback trail and more than 1000 men are finding steady employment in the district which was considered washed up a few years ago new life was breathed into the camp due to improved metallurgy in the treatment of gold ores and an advance in the price of the yellow metal from 2067 ito to 35 an ounce in order to revive the old camp the expenditure otmaro of more than a halt half million dollars for or machinery development and supplies was necessary ne ces the low grade character of 0 the ores required installation of large milling and cyanide plants two ot of which have replaced the barron barren wasteland of the canyon these plants were built by W F snyder sons and the bothwell interests of salt lake city in ad addition altion to tho the tailings which ar are being treated now ore deposits have been blocked out in the mercur golden gate brickyard and geyser marion properties much of this ore are was not nol profitable during the early days and now much experimentation Is necessary in an effort to keep tho the district going on a permanent basis the mercur district known as camp floyd was teeming with activity at the beginning of the silver excitement in 1870 but was practically abandoned as a silver camp until the discovery of gold a law few years later records of tho united states Cle geological survey place the value of from the district at only a small traction of which waa avas paid in dividends much lluch the same as it was during the early days most of the revenue from the ore goss goes tor for labor supplies equipment and taxes with little left over for distribution the district however Is an important factor tit in the welfare of tooele thoele county and a large contributor to the industry ot of utah revival of 0 the district Is testimony to the fact that where mining goes industry progress and individual development go |
