| Show LAKE OUTLET TO BE investigated recently the state engineer T H humphreys and dr aln of the V U A C acuity ty made an investigation to ascertain whether there is an underground outlet to navajo late lake an article in the salt lake tribune of may 20 regarding the investigation vesti gation says the lake has no surface outlet but it has been definitely established that it has hag an underground outlet situated at an elevation at 0 about feet I 1 in the tops top ot of the mountains and surrounded by tree covered hills it is a gem in an emerald setting viewed tor for its t 11 scenic value the state fish and game department has added to ita by stocking it with game fish I 1 last ladt year a project built A dike across one end of the bakk to keep the water back from a porous formation which is bell believed eved to form the outlet but water v was v 99 scarce last tall fall and before lo 10 long r threats to dynamite the dylke dyke were only prevented from being carried into action through diplo diplomacy amicy of state officials the desare of the cedar city people to retain the I 1 i natural beauties of the place and the tact fact that no one could coaly prove where the water would go it if the lake were emptied this year the water scarcity iq 1 knuch much greater the lake is low lowa I 1 and conditions are rather favor j able to determine just where the thea i flow from the lake goes 1 two surface outlets are suspect ed one is duck springs about i seven miles from navajo lake and i in the sevier river drainage area the other is tunnel springs a bout three miles from the lake and 1 in the virgin river drainage it if it can be determined that the navajo lake water is part part of 0 the supply ot of either of these outlets a moot point will be settled I 1 sunday water users from both drainage basins will assemble at the lake along with representatives of the cedar city chamber of 0 f commerce weirs have been esta j dished at both duck springs and the tunnel springs and ceasur ments menta will be made of the row flow then gates in the lake dike will be opened and water permitted to spread over the arest area where the former subterranean outlet existed this water will be colored with floure scein a substance which does not adhere readily to vegetation and a small amount of which will color a large volume of water the flow bow at each ot of the springs will be measured tor for a considerable and the water will be watched for any green tint that floure scein if either flow ingrem increase would reveal the pr presence esene of the es markedly or if the f oure scein coloring appears the problem is ap patently wired if neither happens then that is lenother another story tribune |
